Ford has started production of the Mazda3 sedan at its Chongqing plant in China. The Mazda3 joins the Familia sedan, Premacy minivan and the Mazda6 in the Chinese market, where it will compete with the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra and Buick Excelle, as well as Ford's own Focus.
This is the first Mazda to be assembled by Ford's joint venture with Changan Automotive Group-- its other models are built through another joint venture. Mazda3 platform-mate Ford Focus is also assembled at the Chongqing plant, which will also assemble the Mazda3-based Volvo S40 later this year.
