Detroit Auto Show: Opel Astra Diesel Hybrid

All the attention is on Saturn and these designs are why. There is no coincidence that the Saturn Sky and Aura bear a striking resemblance to the Opel Astra and I believe that it was a conscious effort to show this car in the US to give Americans hope that the Ion will be replaced by something more intriguing. This Astra is powered GM's two-mode diesel hybrid system. The car delivers 25 percent improved fuel economy while maintaining performance by using the 1.7-liter CDTI engine mated to the new two-mode hybrid technology. Pictures and more information at the link.

The diesel engine produces 125 horsepower and two electric motors can help the diesel propel the Astra, or they can do all the work. 0-62 mph times are less than 8 seconds.

The two-mode technology fits in the space of a regular automatic transmission so it does not impede on passenger space. The batteries fit in the spare tire well.

The Astra GTC has an optional ?panoramic roof? in regular production trim.
