A good comedian can rifle off a one-liner when put in the right situation. A great comedian, though, can fire off zingers in any situation. That much is obvious from the start of the latest episode of Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

The quips begin essentially from the start, with Seinfeld introducing today's featured car as a competitor to the Ford Pinto and Chevy Vega, a pair of cars he calls "horrible." The competitor, though, "was even more horrible." Yes, we're talking about the AMC Gremlin.

Why the Gremlin, though? A car that is accepted as one of the single biggest four-wheeled abominations in the long, sad history of four-wheeled abominations? Well, it just happened to be the first car of guest Jon Stewart, of The Daily Show fame. With Stewart in tow, the one-liners really get going. Calling the Gremlin "contraception" for New Jersey's young men in the 1970s and a car for the "broke ignorant", the pair's tour around Manhattan in the dreadful hatchback is cut short by something a bit more suited to the tastes of CICGC fans.

It was an odd and less practical design (back seat was unusable unless the driver was very short, especially with standard front bench seat), but it was quicker and more reliable than the Pinto and especially the Vega, so why it it more horrible than either is unclear to me.

Ya, the Gremlin was definitely a horrible car, but I'm not sure it was any worse than it's contemporaries.

The Gremlin was far superior to its competition at the time which consisted of the Chevrolet Vega and Ford Pinto. It was generic student transportation and it was not a bad car.

The Gremlin wasn't all bad. In many ways it was ahead of its time. It was the first compact kammback hatch, predating the popular VW rabbit by 4 years. At the entry level it was economical before the fuel crisis and even used an Audi 4 cyl 2.0L engine. There was a hot hatch Gremlin X version with a 5.0L V8 and even a rare 401 cid V8. It was generally reliable and practical. Occasionally, you still see some on the road today, unlike the Vega or Pinto. While it isn't a beauty queen, it wasn't all bad for its time.

Out of college in the late 1970s ... My girlfriend at the time had one. It was a fine vehicle. We were newspaper reporters and you had to use your personal car for work, it did the job for her. She got seat covers at the discount store and it was a fine ride. Give the old cars a break. Just like old people they have quirks.

I think the only horrible thing about the Gremlin was it's looks. Other than that, there wasn't anything wrong with it, unlike the Pinto and Vega.

Indeed it was a fairly standard platform for it's time.....essentially a Hornet with the trunk chopped off.

I've wanted an AMX for a very long time... and I'm a fan of the Gremlin as well. I don't understand why they get such a bad rap. I also don't understand why people think John Stewart is funny...

John Stewart should enter a demo derby in a Pinto.

Jon Stewart is as funny as a hemorrhoid. Having a laughing audience filled with unemployed college and high school kids does not mean someone is funny.

you sure do take his pointing out the idiocy of mainstream news personally, do you work for Fox or MSNBC?

I had a '80 Spirit kamback , about the same as a gremlin except for different rear side windows. It wasn't horrible.

I rented one once (only because that's all that was left in the class of car I reserved) the rear end hopped around in normal freeway driving-hazardous. Too bad it got such a bad name and they almost had a decent platform to build a small car when Renault bought em, but then Chrysler bought em and their passenger car line competed with their own so they ended it....ahhh what coulda been.....

I had a friend with a purple one. We used to call it the "High Top Tennis Shoe".
