There can't really be a loser between the Jaguar F-Type Coupe R and the Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition. One might be better than the other, but if you're behind the wheel of either of them, you can't complain. In a new video, Motor Trend takes on the difficult task of determining which one of these European powerhouses is the best, not just in terms of raw performance, but also how they actually feel to drive.

The Porsche 911 is one of the perennial favorites of the motoring world. It just doesn't go away and always seems capable of challenging the top vehicles in its class. In this video, Motor Trend takes a look at the 50th Anniversary Edition model that celebrates that heritage while boosting power somewhat over the standard version.

The F-Type Coupe is an incredibly masculine car, MT describing it as "a British Corvette." The coupe's exterior lines are tautly stretched over its athletic body, and it's supercharged 5.0-liter V8 sounds like a demon's growl. Jaguar seems to have things right with its latest sports car.

Despite the over 100 horsepower advantage the Jag has compared to the Porsche, it doesn't sprint away. Scroll down to see whether Motor Trend found the motoring icon or the new kid on the block as the winner of this shootout.

I priced out a standard 911 vs a Jaguar F-Type R and with similar options the Jaguar came out about 10k cheaper. This is the 380HP 911 vs the 550HP Jag. The Jaguar doesn't really have a lot of options to pick out, it's mostly all standard features. Let's forget about the fact that the Porsche is slower and more expensive. What if you were in the market for a convertible? I know the 911 has a rich history and no one would mind being seen in one... but to me the 911 convertibles have always been dreadfully ugly cars. Price difference be damned if I had to buy a convertible I'd pay more for a gorgeous car like the Jaguar. The 911 convertibles just don't look good. Just to illustrate my point: http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2012/02/lead6-2012-porsche-911-cabriolet-fd-1329883395.jpg http://www.wikipediatrade.com/img/2013-Jaguar-F-Type-2.jpg

I feel the same way about the front end of the Jaguar, it looks like Steve Saleen redid the front of a Pontiac Solstice. The rest of the outside of the car is very nice though. The Porsche is a better drive, though the Jag accelerates faster in most situations. Keep in mind though that you're actually going to have to pay to keep the car on the road though. Porsche maintenance is hideously expensive but the cars are very very well made. We are still waiting for the first Jaguar to establish anything like a reputation for quality in a vehicle made by the Brits (sorry Clarkson).

Not anymore expensive than MB or BMW. Hideous expensive if you compare to Honda/Toyota. And you think Jaguar maintenance is cheaper? LOL Plus Porsche has nowhere near as bad reliability record as Jaguar has. Another word, if you can't afford to upkeep a Porsche, you're not gonna be able to do the same for the Jaguar.

I'd like to point out that the 911 is still ugly.

And I'd just like to point out that you're probably too poor to afford one. Bring on the down votes!!

I did as well. Your comment may be blunt, but accurate. His comment is absurd. The 911 is a timeless beauty...

A 911 flat-six with a Sport Exhaust makes one of the most unique sounds in the automotive world. The Jag has a V8 that sounds similar to most other V8s. It's loud and mean, but so is a Corvette.

Well, perhaps, but a Corvette also has a glorious engine sound. Nothing against the 911 here, but to me at least, there's nothing like the sound of a V8.

The F-Type is the love of my life. The 911 is a great choice, it's just not as emotional. I shouldn't need a piece of paper to justify a roadcar. It should make me smile every time I get in it - like the F-Type does. Auto journalists struggle with the concept of fun. How do you quantify it? You can quantify handling but not enjoyment.

The Jag is stunning to look at and fun. The Porsche is measured fun and more of the same looks wise. I'd buy the Jag every time because it's like a baby Ferrari 458 whilst the Porsche is like the mclaren MP12. Know what O mean?

This is stupid, the F-type R should be going against the 911. For 911 coin you can max out an F-type R and get a better vehicle.

Seriously, it's not like there's no such thing as a 911 in the F -Type' s price range. We're talking about a Ford Explorer sport (365HP) in price difference! for me the Jag+ Explorer sport combo wins this Head2Head.

There's something to be said about the thrill of the drive. Cars like the GT-R and 911 are great driving cars, but they don't really have the thrill of challenging the driver to be a better driver. The sounds, the feel and the challenge that leaves you smiling is the real reason to buy a car like this. The Jag wins on that count alone.
