McLaren F1 GTR Longtail crossing the block in Scottsdale

McLaren only built 106 examples of the devastatingly fast F1 supercar. And though it didn't originally intend to race them, 28 of those produced were turned into GTR competition versions. Of those, only ten featured the extended Longtail bodystyle. Chassis #021R, seen above (click to enlarge), was among the most successful of them, and it's now going up for auction.

Built for the BMW-backed Schnitzer team, 021R competed in the 1997 FIA GT Championship where JJ Lehto and Steve Soper drove it to the checkered flag at Hockenheim and Helsinki (not to mention a handful of other podium finishes) to finish second in the standings.

Consigned to Gooding & Company for its upcoming auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, the rare Longtail GTR still has its original FINA livery and is expected to fetch between $5 and $7 million. That would make it one of the most expensive McLarens ever sold, behind the $8.5 million Gooding garnered for one at Pebble Beach earlier this year.

The most successful 1997 McLaren F1 GTR Longtail, 021R, finished in stunning white, blue and red FINA livery (estimate: $5,000,000-7,000,000) will proudly drive over Gooding & Company's auction stage as one of many premier offerings. The auction commences at 11 a.m. at Scottsdale Fashion Square each day.

Enthusiasts the world over recognize McLaren's F1 GTR as a stunning example of racing technology and timeless design. Competition McLarens rarely appear for public sale and 021R is no exception. This car was campaigned by the Works BMW Motorsport Team and raced by star drivers J.J. Lehto and Steve Soper.

David Gooding, President and founder of Gooding & Company: "We have a celebrated history of offering unique, rare to market McLaren cars. During our Pebble Beach Auctions in 2013, Gooding & Company set a world auction record for the McLaren marque with the sale of a 1997 F1 for $8,470,000. We look forward to continuing the tradition of success at our Scottsdale Auctions."

The GTR Longtail, 021R, is being offered from a significant private collection in its original factory-delivered form with iconic FINA livery. With limited owners from new, this highly sought-after GTR Longtail will arrive at auction having been restored by McLaren and maintained by Lanzante Ltd. This race prepped supercar marks a significant opportunity in today's market.
