When Ford made the decision to end production of the Falcon sedan and Territory CUV in Australia, it wasn't a popular move Down Under. The large, four-door Falcon had been in production for 50 years, and while Ford has reaffirmed its commitment to the Australian market, it's understandable that some people still aren't all that crazy about the Blue Oval's decision.

Speaking to CEO Alan Mulally after Ford's Go Further event in Sydney, Australian site Go Auto reports that the decision was not one made lightly, and that the automaker is doing everything possible to respect the Falcon and Territory's "stakeholders." It's an interesting piece that shows a softer side of a corporation, while demonstrating that Ford is doing everything in its power to make the end of production as smooth as possible for all parties.

      What a crappy piece of journalism by "Go Auto"!!! They completely missed the opportunity to ask Mulally "elephant in the room" questions like, "Does Ford have any plans to use the new 2015 Mustang platform for use in either a 4-door sedan or CUV?" Or, "Is Ford abandoning the idea of rear-drive cars, other than the Mustang, for development or use by either Ford or Lincoln?" Or at least, "Is Ford thinking about selling Lincolns in Australia?" Seriously, good journalists are suppose to at least ask hard questions, even if the answer will be "No Comment".

        Lincoln in Australia? It does not sell well in the US. We get the impression the Mustang will be a two door. In US Speak that is like saying the new Mustang will be a Hatchback or Station Wagon. We are not fond lovers of 2 door Coupes. The Holden GTO and Pontiac G8 were limited run models in Australia.

      You have to be able to make money with your products. The Crown Vic, even with what effectively was huge governmental subsidy through police and fleet sales, couldn't make enough money to keep it alive. Some of those Falcons are super cool rocket power sedans and I really like the new Holden/SS - but volumes just are not high enough anymore. The Falcon technically started out as a 'compact' car - maybe the Escort should be the Australian Falcon. They do get the cool new Ranger and we don't. I wouldn't mind one of those with the diesel.

        The Crown Vic has been around virtually unchanged since 1992. Ford could have easily updated that car over its nearly 20-year lifespan, but chose not to. Just like the Gen-2 Ranger and Fox-body Mustang, they let it waste away.

      Mulally is clearly a great manager. However, for years I find Ford products less appealing than GM or Chrysler. Sit in them. Feel the door materials. Examine the dash fit & finish. I am just not a believer. If they fixed the "feel" of the cars it would help.

      One Ford is beyond retarded. The Five Hundred, 2000-2007 Taurus, and old 2008-2011 Focus are all MUCH better cars than the current Euro Fords. The BOF Explorer and the E Series are MUCH better trucks than either the Explorer or Transit. The European Fords have electrical gremlins, are boring, gutless, and VERY overpriced. I can GUARANTEE you that the next Mustang will just be some ***** Euro-coupe with an inflated price tag. One Ford is just another example of Americans succumbing to the lure of Euro-centrism. We, as Americans, are not supposed to be Europeans, and our founding fathers created our country as a rejection of European values. This is why we don't buy European products and don't succumb to European ideology, like socialism. Since Ford is an American company, its products should be American centric. Ford tried selling European products in the states before with the Merkur and the Countour, it has NEVER worked and never will. Instead of doing that, why can't Ford sell American products in Europe? They are vastly superior to the Euro Fords, and if Europeans are smart, they'll figure that out. They should make a new compact based on an updated version of the 2008-2011 Focus, make a cheaper, bare bones Taurus, and bring over the upcoming Chinese Escort as a subcompact replacement for the Fiesta. They can sell those, as well as the F-150, E series, an updated version of the OLD Explorer, the Expedition, and maybe an updated Freestar as a minivan entry, in Europe.

        That's a good idea, Ford could design a new Ford Capri under the next Mustang as a little sibling... it would be very interesting to catch Scion, Renault and Peugeot consumers... About the European vs American, until the 90's, when there were a big difference between Mondeo, Telstar, Taurus, Scorpio and Crown Victoria not only in the size, but in their construction, today it's a little bit meaningless. If you compare this new Fiesta with the previous, it seems to be the evolution of the Aspire instead of the euro Fiesta, as well the Focus, if it doesn't looks american, it seems to be designed for the same designer who made the Mazda 323C coupé, as well the new Fusion, that looks even more american as in its colors as inside if compared to the previous, which lines are very approached to the previous range of euro Fords. Worse situation is Nissan which are virtually the new Renault, as any Nissan has the awkward style from the french brand, or Chevrolet, which is today the GM's "Hyundai"...

        No, no they were not better cars. The 2008-2011 Focus (which was a tired refresh of the European-designed Mk 1 Focus built in Mexico anyway, so you might want to think about what you are saying ) was not competitive. Seriously, it lost every comparison test it ever entered. The Five Hundred sold like the 10 year old design it was (as it largely copied the Mk 3 VW Passat). Seriously, no one bought that car. It was a lot rock so heavy Ford had t5o hastily redesign it and call it a Taurus. You must not have gotten the memo that a company that almost followed GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy building the cars you are lauding is suddenly now massively profitable. You know why? they aren't listening to you and your crazy idea that anyone would prefer an Econoline to a Transit or the last Focus to the current one. Thank god.

        Im with you on one Ford. It is the exact reason I am no longer a die hard fan. I was ok with the Focus, because American auomakers never made that their thing. Everything else has been. And now while Ford has gained new customers, lets see how long that lasts. Not only that, but the last few Fords I have purchased had too many issues. Its tough because I grew up loving Fords. But Im sorry, if I wanted a european car I would buy one. American design is ours to love and be proud of, but the slap in the face Ford has given the faithful is too much for me to accept. I held emotional ties to Ford, and thats why I get so angered by their one Ford decision. Ford lost its American idenity, and the mustang today is more than proof of that. Ive finally moved on as hard as it was, but I now am the proud owner of a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Next up will be the replacement of the highly disappointing 12 Taurus with a new Impala.

Take a ride in any of the new fords, then come back to me and tell me how awesome the old taurus was lol. I'm born and raised american and the new cars are leaps and bounds better than the ones they replace, i can't quite comprehend how someone could think the opposite...

      I remember "making transition as smooth as possible" for laid off workers in 2009, too. Still a shame that Ford killed RWD sedan instead of updating to a newer RWD platform.

        RWD does compare well or FWD for the average Joe. All they see is it sucks in the snow and it has less interior space. Don,t forget most consumers don't know crap about cars and don't care much except for the looks.

      Falcon didn't have to die. Mulally talks about having meetings about the Australian arm of the business every week for seven years. What did he and those other bright sparks then accomplish in all that time? They decided that once it had deteriorated so badly it couldn't be saved? Of course, no one with a brain could accept that outcome. Basically, Ford HQ has wanted the Australian manufacturing, and the Falcon to die for years now. Because now they don't have to come up with completely piss poor excuses why they could integrate Falcon into the global lineup. And also because at the times it trying to integrate and go to other markets like the US (many years ago now), it would have shown up many of the products made by Ford US at the time. Like the Taurus Cockroach. Not a fan of Ford anymore.

      Falcon had to die because it's not sold in the USA, it's not sold in the USA because they sell the lame Taurus. I believe that the Taurus and Impala must be RWD V6/V8 just as the Charger, ideally based on a muscle car platform (Mustang,Camaro), again just as the Charger share platfrom with the Challenger, by doing this they can effectively differentiate them from Fusion and Malibu, right now they overlap too much. Furthermore, they should make all Lincoln RWD to compete against Cadillac and at the same time differentiate it from Ford

        It's also possible that the Falcon is an old platform that needs huge investments to meet modern global crash and fuel economy standards. Ford looked at the potential sales and decided it was not economical to try to upgrade the platform. And that's including the loss of both the Crown Vic and the Lincoln Town Car, which have been huge sellers. It's an ugly decision, but my guess is that they are engineering a new global RWD platform based on the next gen Mustang. The really unfortunate thing is that they killed the current aging (?) platform before having a replacement. I'm guessing that was a matter of economics, but it's still a rather poor decision if you look at it as an outsider without all the facts.

          If they actually ARE designing a new global RWD platform to be used by a future vehicle in Australia, then why bother canceling the Falcon? You could just keep it going with the new platform. However this very public "death" of the Falcon leads me to believe that is not going to happen.
