Vehicle performance tests are serious business, with reputations made or broken by things like braking distance, top speed, and lateral g-forces. King of the metrics, though, is the 0-60 run, which for unknown reasons has become the benchmark for what truly makes a car a performance machine.

Now, Chris Harris from Drive has turned the whole idea behind the sprint to 60 on its ear. Taking a new Ford Fiesta ST, Harris asks a simple question: would the ST be quicker to 60 on its own, or on a trailer being towed by a Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG?

It's a fair question, really. The Fiesta Harris tested hit 60 in 7.2 seconds on a slightly uphill section of runway. It should be noted that Harris quotes his ST at 182 horsepower, which is about 15 ponies less than what we're getting in the US, so these numbers might not hold up all that well against an American model. The G63 AMG, meanwhile, is a 536-horsepower monster, powered by a twin-turbo V8 that, able to propel the big SUV to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds without towing a Fiesta.

So, is the Fiesta ST quicker with or without some AMG aid? Have a look below to find out.

That's the kind of fun stuff that Top Gear used to do.

Those 2 cars are basically my ideal, non-fantasy land, garage (+ race car which the G Wagon tows to the track).

I don't think sitting in that Fiesta without a helmet is safe while being towed at 100mph on that measly trailer. Pretty dangerous indeed.

Oh lord, you're one of those annoying safety advocates. Unless you're familiar with the trailer I don't allow any room for accuracy in your statement.

Because Europeans work on the basis of common sense when someone does something stupid, as opposed to a litigious tirade in the courts.

The only reason the North American hp figure is quoted as 197 is that over here Ford includes the additional 11 or so hp generated in the available 20 second turbo overboost at WOT in the advertised total. It is not legal to do so in Europe or the UK. In fact, as we will be getting the 4 door version which is 134 lbs heavier than the 2 door UK body style, the NA Fiesta ST's 1/4 mile times will be worse by .3 to.5 sec through the quarter. When you add to that the fact that the Moutune upgrade, good for an additional 17 hp and available in Europe, will not be offered here, the NA version has been somewhat neutered out of the gate.

Plus, the 3 door looks much better and the 134lb weight difference with the extra doors affects handling and chassis rigidity. But if the Focus ST Estate available in Europe is any indication, the difference in performance for added practicality and ~100lb more weight really wouldn't make too much of a difference.

this is a pretty interesting and funny comparison - especially compared to the idiot comparisons they do on Top Gear: "this week, we're going to see if we can fill the trunk of a bentley with sand faster than my nan can darn a sock". but still, i have an abiding hatred for zero-to-X times ... so much of the result depends on the launch from standstill, yet your impression of a car's performance (especially on a track) will have nothing to do with its behavior under twenty miles an hour

Why, AB, must you CONTINUE to taunt me with videos and photo galleries of the Fiesta 3 door when WE CAN'T GET IT IN THE US????!!!!! It is sooooo much more attractive than the 5 door.
