The denouement is happening in geologic time, but it looks like historic British carmaker Bristol will be resurrected with a hybrid supercar courtesy of another historic former British carmaker, Frazer-Nash. Four years ago, Frazer-Nash, now a Swiss company specializing in hybrid and alternative drivetrains, showed off the Namir concept designed by Guigiaro. After Bristol went bankrupt in 2011 it was bought by Kamkorp Autokraft, the parent company of Frazer-Nash with plans to make a hybrid supercar.

The Namir was a series hybrid with a total of 362 horsepower, a 0-to-62 mile per hour acceleration time of 3.5 seconds, a claimed top speed of 187 mph and 91.7 US miles per gallon. The new Bristol could employ the same powertrain, according to a report in Autocar, "a compact rotary" that powers the lithium ion battery pack, that powering the electric motor driving all four wheels.

We might not be close to the finish – Frazer-Nash hasn't said when this new Bristol will arrive, nor who will design it. It has said, though, that it has "firm intention" to build the car.

        As much as I hate to say it hybrids are the future. Just because the Cruze is being offered a Diesel engine doesn't mean Americans are just going to hop on board. Diesels only account for 20% of all passat sales stateside. Plus Americans like to show others how they are helping the world by doing nothing, and hybrids help accomplish that more so than diesels.

          The irony being that hybrids leave a much larger carbon footprint when you consider all the lithium mining, as well as transportation and refining for said lithium, but I know I'm just beating a dead horse here...

          @Rapid Monkey93 First of all that's a very misleading comparison. Lithium usage in a battery pack is a one time cost. Gasoline/diesel usage is a usage based cost. Lithium mining and transport has very little carbon footprint. A hybrid battery pack with 1-2kWh of capacity, and given each kWh requires only about 0.3kg of lithium carbonate, you are looking at an upwards of 0.6kg for the entire life of the car. The mining and transport/refining of 5000 gallons of fuel or about 14000 kg for a typical lifetime of a car is going to have much bigger impact.

        Let me see... Mitsubishi seems to be following your "advice" to a tee and their i is the worst selling car in America. Maybe you should start your own business so you can fail so hard it knocks your socks off. But hey, lightweight aero cars are just SO CHEAP to make right? That is why the new VW experimental car coming to market has a carbon fiber tub that costs 10 grand to make.

        Dan, I like the numbers, but it's a pipedream. The Roadster pushed 3000 pounds (2732 ?), had a .35 drag coefficient, and a nearly 1000 pound battery pack. So in your version, let's say a 400 pound battery pack (less than half needed because of reduction of mass, much better aero, and half range ? 600 kg = 1320 pounds, minus 400 for battery pack = 920 pounds for everything else. That would be really tough without resorting to carbon fiber, etc. Then the cost skyrockets again. Roadster 53 kw-hr battery pack. So let's say 25 kw-hr in our new Roadster. $400/kw-hr ? = $10k just for the batteries ? If you could do all this for $25k, I'd buy one. But, I think there's a reason Tesla was selling the Roadster for closer to $150k than their advertised $109k. So let's half those numbers. Still doesn't look good. I remember seeing the Roadster in the entrance hall of the LA Auto Show about a year before any were sold. "Aero sucks; what are they thinking?"

      While the numbers seem a but optimistic to me, and parts of the interior look to be salvaged from an old shooting jacket, I say go for it. It can't hurt to have another far-out super car praying its way towards reality.
