2012 Subaru Impreza spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

Subaru released a side profile shot of its 2012 Impreza sedan ahead of the car's New York Auto Show debut, and now, our trusty spy photographers have caught the new Subie out in public, revealing its fresh face. Rather unfortunately, the production-spec Impreza looks to be a pretty drastic departure from the decidedly hot concept car that bowed at the Los Angeles Auto Show last November.

The automaker is keeping quiet about what's under the hood of its new Impreza (the black car seen above looks like it might be a base model), but the brand has already confirmed that a revised version of the trusty boxer flat-four powerplant will be on hand and good for 36 miles per gallon on the highway – a figure all but unmatched in the all-wheel drive kingdom. Subaru will continue to offer the Impreza in both sedan and hatchback formats, and of course, AWD will be standard.

As for the design, we'll wait until the 2012 WRX and STI present themselves before making the final judgments. Slap some more aggressive styling elements on this thing, along with rally-spec blue paint and gold wheels, and perhaps we'll be singing a different tune.

It looks good but bland. I see a mishmash of subtle cues from Cruze, maybe a little current-gen Focus here, a slightly fat butt, nothing to write home about stylistically. The mileage with AWD is pretty nice though.

I'm more interested to see the Forester and what they do for its mid-life refresh.

This is how it should have looked for the PREVIOUS generation, not the new one!

I dunno why so many o you are surprised by how disappointing the production model is. Remember that Legacy concept?

Subaru and Toyota are joint-venture right? No wonder this thing looks identical to the blander-for-2011 Corolla (aka Toyota Cupcake).

      :-/
Oh well, it could have been worse. I'll hold out for the WRX/STI version as well before passing final judgement.
Holding thumbs that the Toyobaru will look half decent.

ive been paying more attention to the bmw x1 than the impreza itself... just looks like a corolla slightly tossed and remixed.

I'm wondering why they bothered calling the concept an Impreza if they were just going to disappoint us with this. I feel like I was fooled. Time for me to move on from Sube.

Congratulations Subaru! You made the 2012 Impreza look like the 2007 Nissan Sentra....I'm very happy I bought my WRX when I did.

I can only hope that they plan to use a MUCH different front fascia and flared fenders on the WRX and STI.....

I guess I'll wait and see....
