The Mustang family tested head-to-head – Click above to watch video after the jump

The crew over at Inside Line has manged to put together a test that any auto enthusiast should be eager to read about. Ford's entire lineup of Mustangs has something unique to offer, and IL wrangled up one of each different 'Stang on offer: V6, GT, Boss 302 Laguna Seca and Shelby GT500. In the end, there can be only one...

All four cars were flogged on a pair of tracks, including the 1.6-mile loop at Streets of Willow. The finishing order based on lap times was predictable, but the numbers are impressive across the board. Also, Inside Line didn't choose its winner based solely on fastest time around the track. Click past the jump to watch the cars in action, then be sure to head over to Inside Line to read about the results.

        Yeah, he's a professional, and it appears that the Inside line guys were not.

        Let's see this rerun with someone talented behind the wheel.

      The Boss suspension is improved, not the chassis. You would 'think' Edmunds could get that right.
        • 3 Years Ago
        @theward
        the suspension is a part of the chassis you asshat.. also apart of the chassis is the motor, transmission, rear diff, brakes, wheels and tires.

        so actually, the BOSS chasis is greatly improved. IL got it right... you don't know jack. the BOSS is superior in all aspects of the chassis, sans horsepower. but i still bet 9/10 people would take the 5.0 over the S/C 5.4L any day.. i know i would..

        @theward
        k.... you're still an idiot.

        so what makes your google sources more reliable than wiki??? but for the hell of it, i googled "automotive chassis" and looked at the pictures. guess what most of them are pictures of...

        i guess it's a good thing i have a source that trumps anything you googled and anything wiki says. my roommate went to wyotech and he builds and rebuilds custom cars.. he confirmed what i said..

        but since you disagree, and not even a car builder could change your mind, tell me.. what is a chassis???

        Mr./Ms theward, I'd recommend stepping away from your computer and getting some real world experience before you start calling everybody out. Check out http://standards.sae.org/chassis/ to see how SAE defines chassis. I admire your confidence in Google but it doesn't always give you the correct answer...

        Well, I'll disagree with you. Some googling will find that your answer is wrong and the only place that supports your answer is wiki, which I wouldn't trust as far as I could throw it, since any 'asshat' can edit it.

      After seeing the time the lowly V6 put down I have a greater longing for an Ecoboost Pony with the Boss chassis/suspension/make the tires stick better to the tarmac mods.
        • 3 Years Ago
        Not a bad wish really, after all, a well setup chassis always matters, a big engine not so much.
        Add on the better brakes and I'm there with you.

      Next GT 500: Boos 302 Laguna seca + 5.0 S.C 600 Hp.
      • 3 Years Ago
      So obviously they need to make one more version of this car.

      Shove the gt500 engine in the boss. and then give me a free one for coming up with such a brilliant idea.

      The camaro would have a long ways to go before catching that thing!

      ford just keep working on the live axle everyone is always giveing Porsche a hard time about their rear engine design, & every time they come up with a better car presistance SHO that M3 WHO'S THE BOSS!!!! That's coming from bimmer owner, cause my heart is still a FORD GUY, It's good to see them wake up!!
      • 3 Years Ago
      now there's a whole lot of boring.
      • 3 Years Ago
      Yeah I was expecting the Boss to be faster to I mean Ford talked that car up so much you think it would be the fastest Mustang. The Shelby did have the SVT package though.
        • 3 Years Ago
        the GT500 has more the a 100 hp advantage... that's a lot..

        the Boss is plenty quick.. after all, it beats the M3 round Laguna Seca, which is certainly something to talk about.

      is there a place to see other track times at willow springs so we can compare these with other cars?
      • 3 Years Ago
      Boss 302 Please!!!
        • 3 Years Ago
        they are all good choices... the gt500 is my least favorite somehow...but still awesome!
        • 3 Years Ago
        Looks like the best pick.
      • 3 Years Ago
      After reading the review, the real winner is the base V6. Much performance for relatively small money.
        • 3 Years Ago
        The track pack V6's could be found used for about $23k while I was shopping last year. That's a lot of car for the money. I drove a base package at the track and was very impressed.

        But I couldn't get my head around the V6. The old 3v 4.6 makes the right noises for me.

      I was very surprised to see the GT500 was faster than the Boss. Ford must have been very careful to preserve the heirarchy.

      I am assuming this is sans TracKey?
        • 3 Years Ago
        @KDAWG

        The Boss in both regular and Laguna Seca trim levels has a TracKey.
        • 3 Years Ago
        I don't think the Laguna Seca uses the track key, it's hard core all the time.

        I was also surprised the GT500 was faster, but I think it won based solely on the engine power. The laguna seca is better balanced and has an overall better chassis, given the same power the boss would dominate the Shelby.
