A tension adjuster pulley is the culprit in a round of recalls by Suzuki covering 2009-2011 Grand Vitaras and 2010-2011 SX4s. This pulley supports the drive belt, which runs alternator, water pump, air conditioner and power steering pump.
Should the belt come off while driving, the vehicle will quickly become more difficult to steer and the engine could stall. Dealers will swap the pulley out for one that works correctly at no charge to owners of the affected vehicles. The recall begins on February 16th, 2011 and will affect 32,291 Suzuki vehicles.

SUZUKI / GRAND VITARA 2009-2011
SUZUKI / SX4 2010-2011

Manufacturer: AMERICAN SUZUKI MOTOR CORP. Mfr's Report Date: JAN 27, 2011
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 11V055000 NHTSA Action Number: N/A

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ALTERNATOR/GENERATOR/REGULATOR

Potential Number of Units Affected: 32,291

Summary:
SUZUKI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 SUZUKI GRAND VITARA MULTIPURPOSE PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 4-CYLINDER ENGINES; MODEL YEAR 2011 SUZUKI GRAND VITARA MULTIPURPOSE PASSENGER VEHICLES PRODUCED PRIOR TO OCTOBER 17, 2010; MODEL YEAR 2010 SUZUKI SX4 PASSENGER VEHICLES; AND 2011 SUZUKI SX4 PASSENGER VEHICLES PRODUCED PRIOR TO OCTOBER 14, 2010. THE TENSION ADJUSTER PULLEY FOR THE DRIVE BELT THAT OPERATES THE ALTERNATOR, WATER PUMP, AIR CONDITIONER COMPRESSOR AND POWER STEERING PUMP, HAS AN IMPROPERLY MANUFACTURED INTERNAL SPRING THAT CAN BREAK DUE TO REPEATED STRESS. IF THE SPRING BREAKS, THE DRIVE BELT WILL NOT BE ADJUSTED PROPERLY AND CAN SLIP, CAUSING A SQUEAKING NOISE. OR THE DRIVE BELT COULD COME OFF CAUSING THE DRIVER TO INCREASE TO STEER THE VEHICLE. THIS CAN ALSO CAUSE THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE INDICATION TO RISE, WHICH CAN LEAD TO THE ENGINE OVERHEATING, OR CAN CAUSE THE CHARGING LIGHT TO COME ON, WHICH CAN LEAD TO BATTERY DISCHARGE AND ENGINE STALL.

Consequence:
IF THE DRIVE BELT COMES OFF, REQUIRING THE DRIVER TO USE INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, OR THE ENGINE STALLS, A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE TENSION ADJUSTER PULLEY WITH AN IMPROVED PART. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE FEBRUARY 16, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SUZUKI AT 1-887-697-8985 OR VISIT SUZUKI'S WEBSITE AT HTTP://WWW.SUZUKIAUTO.COM.

Suzuki is almost dead in America.

Maybe VW should allow VW dealers to sell Suzuki cars now that VW owns 20% of Suzuki.

        Unfortunately, they are.

It is their own doing though through poor management. Bringing the Daewoo rebadges here was one of the worst mistakes that they ever made. They were HORRIBLE cars, and very unreliable as well. Suzuki closing more dealerships was a mistake. There are only three within 100 miles of my house, the closest one being over 50 miles away.
Also, their marketing campaign has always been piss poor with little to no excitement.

Well, my mother's SX4 is an '07, so she's safe from *this* particular recall.

When is BMW going to do the same? Oh that's right. Forgive me. Pulley replacement is a "maintenance" item just like control arm bushings, cooling systems, and VANOS units.

how much input does the car builder have toward outsourced parts? Do they design it & then outsource? In other words, who goofs? appropriate web site, anyone?

Okay I just bought my Suzuki SX4 sportback lol and I'm seeing this recall. Is my car affected by this recall?

Not just their Daewoo rebadged vehicles but the GM one too. XL7/Equinox was truly terrible.

Suzuki makes one hell of an awesome outboard motor. Like their cars they have too few dealers.
