Spy Shots: Mini Speedster on the prowl – Click above for high-res image gallery

Spy lenses in Germany recently caught sight of the upcoming 2012 Mini Coupe, and now those same crafty photogs just trained their cameras on a quasi-camouflaged Mini Speedster.

Like its fixed-top sibling, we can clearly see a low-slung shape and a pop-up rear spoiler for some added sporty flair. We're not sure what all that yellow swirliness is supposed to be covering, but we look forward to finding out, and to seeing this runabout with its top in the stowed position.

The two-door drop-top has been rumored to make an appearance for over a year now and it seems we're getting closer to seeing a production version bathed by auto show stage lights. Since we don't know when that will occur, the gallery below will have to do for now.

Reminds me of the RedBull Mini, but without the giant can of RedBull mounted on it.

It makes any generation Mazda Miata/MX-5 look masculine.

I don't get it. Who requested this?

Mini is trying to compete with the MX5?

      FWD vs RWD...

I know where my money is going.

Reminds me of the Geo Metro convertible.

Stupidest looking convertible since the Suzuki X90

Totally agree. This thing is horribly ugly, and it looses any retro throwback appeal that the standard Mini has. Also, that automatic spoiler, sitting behind that hiddeous bubble shaped ragtop will do nothing except add complication, cost, weight, and an even smaller truck space.

        The X90 wasn't a convertible, it was actually a coupe with T-tops.

        @ Nicksgarage

        You're right, T-top,

Okay, Stupidest looking 2 seater since the X90 and the stupidest looking convertible since the Chevrolet Sprint / Ponitac Firefly / Geo Metro / Suzuki Sprint convertibles

I don't get it... The Mini is already small car.

Looks like a dodgy kit car copy of a Ford Street KA.

My guess is we'll see it in NY. Can't wait. I actually like the coupes' unique look over this. At least what the coupe might look like.

What a bizarre model to build, it's a Mini Copper except the cabin is now tiny instead of really small.
