BMW 1 Series M Coupe and E30 M3 – Click to watch the video after the jump

The beauty of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe isn't that the bean-counters let their best performance engineers have at the smallest car in the range. The real beauty is that the car goes back to the very roots of the M division, before the M3 went all V8 on us and took a hefty weight penalty in the process.

To illustrate the point, BMW took the new coupe out to the track, and brought along its spiritual predecessor, the original E30 M3. Fortunately for us, they filmed the encounter – all 11 and a half minutes of it. And while half of it is stock promotional footage, there's a good few minutes of on-track action spliced in for good measure. Check it out in the video after the jump.

i bet EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU that are saying you'd take the old one over the new one would be proven liars if someone actually offered you one or the other for free. let's be serious here.

you make like the "idea" of the old one better, but one is an old toy and the other is a sweet, world-class daily driver.

do you guys all stick a post-it note with your car's curb weight on the dash so you can stare at it wherever you go?

If you had any idea how hard it is to find a clean E30 M3 Evo... you'd understand why we would take that E30 any day. That car is the essence of BMW. Since then, it's become a luxury brand where a bunch of rich senseless idiots buy the cars for status.
... if you put a bag over the new one, I'll probably like it more than the old one for sure.
Not a chance. The E30 M3 is on my "list of cars I need to own", along with the original 240Z, a '69 Mustang GT and Corvette Stingray.

      "hotness"?

The most boring video of the year
BMW will have to say the car is shorter, narrower and lighter to earn my full respect. I still want one.

What a stupid, boring, braindead, video! Surely BMW could hire a professional studio to do the footage... if you can call it so. And is that a fly we can hear in the first five minutes? Preposterous!
I wish the new one had the same proportions as the e30 ,it just doesn't look "right"
Then the 1M goes into limp mode after HPFP failure and the E30 wins the day!
      . . . I'll take the pretty black one.

I love you, BMW, I really do. But can't you hire an editor and buy some music?
This video is RUBBISH !! Surely they could have edited out the fly buzzing around at the beginning ! BOOO !

Also, I absolutely love the 1M ! Am I the only one ?!

Now if only Honda did the same thing, returned the Civic and Accord back to their respective original size class. Manufacturers have to stop this "We must make the new model bigger/ more powerful, add an inch here and an inch there". Bigger must be better? NOT!
If BMW ever came out with a modern interpretation of the 2002 or Nissan with the Datsun 510 (I have an Altima 3.5SE, close, but still too big) I would be at the dealership with cash in hand.

Unfortunately, that's not the view of the majority of the people that buy cars :(
Peope want the biggest, most comfortable, most insulated, most reliable platform... only a small few are willing to sacrifice size, comfort, and reliability for that 'fun' factor
        • 4 Years Ago
Umm Honda did do that; in the same way that BMW had to invent the 1 series because their cars were getting too big Honda went and imported the Fit. Now you have that Fit that is the size of the old Civic and the current Civic which is now the size of the late 80's Accord. Pay attention man.

I'll take the E30 M3, BMW can keep the new one.
WOW - the old M3 is so much better-looking than newer 1M BMW blob-with-weird-creases look! Doesn't seem like BMW will fully recover from Bangle.

The real problem was the lack of a V8 in the E46 M3.
The few that BMW made and more or less legally raced until the car was thrown out ruled.

Same with the 1M. Should have put the S54 engine innit rather than the damn turbo.

"The real problem was the lack of a V8 in the E46 M3."

        Absolute bollocks.
