2007 Opel Gran Turismo Coupe Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

Grumblings about a new Opel Calibra have been around for years, and now there's some substance behind the rumors. In 2007 Opel spoke of developing a Calibra based on the Opel GTC Concept shown at the 2007 Geneva Auto Show. Now GM Europe chief Nick Reilly has waved his wand and said, "I believe we should have one, so we will have one."

Although Reilly has said, "Make it so," issue remain. When the matter was brought up earlier this year, the question was whether to think of this as a Calibra or an Insignia Coupe, since the GTC Concept was quite a bit longer than the two-door Opel of yore. And if the 30,000-units-per-year is still the number to justify a Calibra, would it make sense for the brand to make a much smaller coupe that compromises the Insignia's roominess?

Engines are already being mentioned as Vauxhall's smaller displacement, turbo powerplants. The top trim could get some variant of the 320-horsepower motor in the Insignia GXR, and have all-wheel drive.

      Yes, make it so indeed.

Some of the lines remind me of the 370z and the Scion TC.
A good looking coupe for sure.

Am I the only person here seeing the obvious grave robbing going on?

The interior is stylized in purely Pontiac fashion, the red glow instrumentation is an obvious steal, and the rehashed GTP "drop the p and go with a c" logo is just painful!!!

G.M. should feel shamed... they took a storied American brand, killed it on an upswing, and dissected it for parts so that it's other divisions can run around in more exciting disguises!!!

Overall it's not bad. I would rather have GM make the Holden Coupe60 concept a production car though. Or if they made this an AWD, Boosted V6 regal coupe available in the US, I guess I wouldn't complain about that.
The Holden coupe 60 is based on the same chassis as the camaro.
Based on the size of the Holden, it wouldn't surprise me if it shared chassis with the Calibra.

If the Holden came over as a Chevy Nova, while Buick got the Opel, we might be spoiled for choice.

Wow its a 2-Door Regal (Hint hint Buick/GM)

"I believe we should have one, so we will have one."

        I like this guy.

I certainly hope that GM brings this Stateside - any extra production would only be beneficial for their business case, and the extra cost for having it built in Germany would be offset by the expected upcharge for a coupe...
...perhaps they could call it a Buick Special or a Century?

Looks like a Nissan coupe. Or a Honda Accord coupe.
Exactly what i thought... Altima coupe or Accord coupe.
My thought exactly--looks a lot like the Infiniti G37 coupe, except with a mess of a front end. Shows how stylists are so influenced by one another.
At first glance I thought, "Did Nissan come out with an updated Altima Coupe? Looks nice!"
A common complaint with the Insignia is the styling looks very Japanese. This coupe does even moreso. The old Calibra was drop-dead gorgeous compared to this, and that design is now well over 20 years old.
"No, this Opel is not Japanese-styled."

Perhaps you should spend some quality time in Europe then and get a feel for the general consensus. That said, I don't think even that move would stop you from typing the bollocks you usually write.

The original Calibra had graceful lines - in fact it was only let down by its chassis. This concept is a dud which apes Japanese coupe design.
Perhaps you should spend more time actually looking at the Japanese cars that you claim that this car copies, rather than mindlessly saying things that make no sense.

        Think, then post, please.

No, this Opel is not Japanese-styled.

Right now, practically all Japanese cars have a round front fender arch with a rising sweep line to the rear deck. See the Mazda and Nissan for very obvious examples; Honda and Toyota are similar, and Subie is now doing this as well.

        The Opel is more angular.

The only real commonality is the aero fastback, but the original Calibra had that, too. And this fastback is handled better than pretty much all of the Japanese competition. Compare with the Nissan coupes, for example.

      I am torn here.

On the one hand, I think this Calibra should definitely be put into production and probably could be built rather easily since it appears to be based on the Insignia. And to expand their sales volume, I would assume (at least I hope) that they would also bring it to the US. This car would be a slightly higher-end car to go up against the hideous Accord Coupe, Altima coupe and Toyota Solara (if they still even make it).

On the other hand, if Buick is to get a 2 door coupe as a pseudo "halo car," then I would be much more interested in them putting the Riviera concept into production. Then again, the Riviera if it ever gets made, would probably be based on the upcoming Caddy ATS/next-gen Camaro RWD platform.

Not really feeling those fangs/tear ducts. Reminds me of Mazda's current fog light surrounds, only gaudier.

I like the styling of Opel so much better than what we get here..
