2011 Volkswagen Jetta live – Click above for high-res image gallery

Volkswagen of America descended upon New York City this morning and, much to the chagrin of native New Yorkers, plugged up Times Square with the world premiere of its 2011 Volkswagen Jetta. For being inconvenienced, Manahattanites were treated to a free Katy Perry concert on VW's Urban Oasis stage after the sheets were finally yanked from three sixth generation Jettas. We had a man on the scene who battled the crowd for live shots, which you can view in the high-res image gallery below, as well as video of the car's reveal after the jump.

I like it, but I certainly don't love it. It's handsome and classy, but bland. I wish they could recapture the funky, understated looks of the Mk III and Mk IV Jettas.

Zzzzzzzz did toyota and VW merge?
I've always that. VW and Toyota are like the same thing, especially if you compare the range of models that offer in their home markets.

      What the...

      I guess if I want a TDI sportwagon I better get a 2010 before they're all gone.
The TDI sportwagons are selling really well (something like 70% are TDI), so I doubt they will kill it. They just "refreshed" the sportwagon for 2010.

Man, what a bland-looking car! Hyundai's new Sonata makes the new Jetta look like it was designed five years ago (which it probably was). Of course, the only car VW sells - unfortunately not here in the U.S. - that I would even consider owning is the Scirocco, but for a sedan in the Jetta's class the Sonata is the winner.

I guess they do the reveal in NYC because it is a media center, and not because most people there think cars are yellow with a sign on the top.

Not a bad styling call on VWs part. They had a one-off runaway hit with the Jetta 2 gens ago, then followed it up with something else, which didn't do so well supposedly because of the price more than anything (aside from the goofy headlights).

So they're following it up with a more variable, longer 'Americanized' model than is also cheaper on the low end, in an obvious attempt to regain sales and appeal to a wider range.

It's easy to predict the typical AB response to a mass-market car, as we're typically not mass market buyers. The question we should be asking is if the high end of this new redesign will have AWD for both the Jetta and Sportwagen.
well, no. the question we should be asking ourselves is, 'is this an improvement from the previous car'. just as we do with any enthusiast car. or 'how does this compare to cars in the range'.

if vw put the 3.2L and awd in this i'd buy it in a heart beat :P. but they wont, or any 4motion for that matter. we get 4mo cars because they sell in europe. a 2.0T+4mo jetta wont sell well enough over there to justify its existence and spill over to the us.

Bunch of moron comments. Everyone who thinks this car is bland obviously has no knowledge of automotive design or style, the history of it, or the motives and methods used. You can prefer some styles to others because of the emotional reaction you have but a true car enthusiast appreciates all good design . That's not to say there aren't bad designs, or rather, designs that failed, but this is certainly not one of them.

Think before you speak (or type).

With new small cars becoming more and more exciting, someone had to fill in the blandness gap, that someone is apparently VW.
Not bad, only problem is that A lot of the Asian brands have copied VW. Can't wait to see what motors they put into it.

Hope she changed the lyrics to "You're so dull..." to match the car.

It looks like the kind of girl who would kiss another girl and like it. Nothing beautiful about this redesign except for the price drop. I wouldn't say it is offensive like the Juke just so bland that it wouldn't stand out in a parking lot of Camcords.

The picture they used for the billboard was awful choice. Reminds me of a Ford Five Hundred there.
