Think the 599 GTO is the fastest Ferrari ever created? Well, it may be the fastest roadcar, but the next project to wear the Prancing Horse promises even more power and that much more blinding acceleration. So much so, in fact, that occupants are provided with protective eyewear to shield against the wind rapidly moving over their faces.

We're talking about Formula Rossa, the headline attraction at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. Set to open later this year, the theme park on the Persian Gulf is set to incorporate 20 main attractions, including two roller coasters. One of them is the F430 Spider-based coaster previewed a couple of months ago, and now Ferrari has announced details on the second.

Formula Rossa is designed to mimic the aesthetics and experience of the Scuderia's F1 race cars. It'll be driven by a 20,800-horsepower winch system, accelerating from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in two seconds flat and rocket to its peak height of 52 meters (170 feet) in less than five seconds. The four-car trains will take 16 passengers for the ride along more than two kilometers (1.3 miles) of track, hitting 1.7 Gs of acceleration along the way. Thrilled yet? Follow the link to check out the video and the jump for the details in the press release.

Formula Rossa Overview

Barcelona, 6 May - How Fast is Too Fast?

Strap yourself into the F1 cockpit and hold on, as you blast away on the fastest roller coaster on the planet. You'll accelerate to 240km/h and see what 1.7 Gs really feels like. You'll scream over the track and 52 meters into the sky before flying through the chicanes and across the finish line on the Formula Rossa.

Formula Rossa celebrates speed, aerodynamics and technical innovation.

A featured attraction at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the world's first Ferrari theme park and largest attraction of its kind, Formula Rossa will take you on the most thrilling ride of your life.

The Formula Rossa journey will begin in a temperature controlled pre-ride waiting area, where riders will be given protective eyewear, designed to protect passengers from the windforce generated by the coaster's high speed. Using a hydraulic winch system, similar to those used to launch jet planes, the F1 inspired coaster is then shot out of the launch area using 20,800 horsepower and propelled to a height of 52m in less than 5 seconds.

Riders are then taken on a blindingly fast and thrilling experience along a 2.07 km track full of sharp turns and sudden drops.

According to the designers of Formula Rossa, Jack Rouse Associates, the key challenge in building the world's fastest roller coaster was obtaining the desired speed without compromising passenger safety and comfort.

      @Gruv, BeeQal, inteller

Rather than slamming other cultures and nations perhaps it's best to ponder why the Arab world is flush with cash and why the United States is going broke. Scream at our politicians not at Abu Dhabi

      Oil is why.

Well I'm not going to lie, I'm going to be in that area of the world next winter for a while and probably visiting Dubai/Abu Dhabi for about a week or so. I might check it out, the prancing pony has had a special place in my heart since I lived in Italy as a kid. And hell, it's a theme park, they're supposed to be fun.

      Mother of crap!

Totally agree with you except the part about the theme park as I haven't been there. Also, I totally respect your disregard for the stupidity that is "political correctness" which you've bravely displayed here by way of this honest and true comment. The way the world is headed and if these rich Middle Easterners continue to manipulate the West with their wealth, less and less people will have the balls to say what you just said.

        But yes vwgtifan...mother of crap!

"They" have always been into fast things. They always loved riding horses, in fact, "they" were the best horsemen and have the best horses in the world, you know the time before cars.

So it is nothing new, it was always part of their culture. Europe also has a good history of kill each other, now look they have cars too!

oh come on you guys...as they say, fools and their money are soon parted.
These guys suddenly find themselves sitting on trillions of dollars?
Well here's a bunch of companies (Ferrari included) that seem more than willing to help them get rid of all that heavy cash with extremely overpriced, high-profit margin products.
milking them for all it's worth doesn't sound too terrible to me, since they do it to us at the gas pump...

I like the token arab couple in the picture. So when their burkka flies off in the air do they disembark the ride and proceed to get stoned?
You guys are taking this thing waayyyy to far. Ferrari might be trying to make some extra cash, but why not? Autoblog just had a post on how sports car sales are down...
I love the conceptual picture, look at the people on the ride. Too funny!
Something you're forgetting... top speed of 149 MPH.

Man, I bet that thing handles like it's on rails!
I hope the track mimics the famous corners of F1.
Fast, but so what? You still can't drive it. Bumpercars rule.

Top Thrill Dragster does 0-120mph in 2.8 seconds.

      It's a fun ride!
eh. Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure, NJ...0-128mph in 3.5 seconds. now THAT'S fast!

Abu Dhabi sounds a lot like heaven for a hardcore F1 fan...
Sounds exiting, but not dangerous enough. I think I'll go to the next Weight Watchers meeting and run through the crowd with a Twinkie.
