VIDEO: BMW tests new wind tunnel with a model we can appreciate
The more things change, the more things change. If you would have asked our opinion, we would have told you that open top motoring means feeling the wind in your hair. NEIN! says BMW. And to prove just how far they've come in two short decades, the boys and girls at Bimmer decided to stick footballer wife and all around hottie Sylvie van der Vaart in a wind tunnel with two very different BMW droptops.
At first, Sylvie gets all tarted up in her best Falcon Crest summer ensemble with matching Aqua Net hair and gets behind the wheel of a 1987 E30 convertible. The wind tunnel is switched on and a 60 km/h (about 37 mph) wind is upon her hairdo. Rats, says her stylist. Ruined. Then Mrs. van der Vaart changes into some late first-decade-of-the-twenty-first-century duds and climbs into a folding hard top E93. Wind starts blowing and... not a thing, at least in terms of Sylvie's hair. It's as if her and the porcine 3 Series aren't in a high tech wind tunnel. Says van der Vaart, "What a difference from the older model! I couldn't feel the wind at all – I even had to check to see if they'd even turned it on."
A couple of points – sadly, Sylvie was diagnosed with cancer right after the photo shoot was completed. She was treated, so far so good, but now wears a wig. We know this because BMW chose to exploit her illness to point out that despite the wig, Sylvie still rocks out in a convertible. Thanks, BMW! That said, automotive aerodynamics have sure come a very long way since Malcolm Sayer taped tufts of wool to the E-Type. Also, not only were BMWs better looking in the Eighties, but fashion was, too. Hairdo test in the new BMW wind tunnel.
She sits in a 1987 open-top BMW 3 Series Convertible, authentically dressed in an eighties-style Bordeaux-coloured dress, her hair down and put into perfect shape by a hair specialist. She is slightly nervous before the "test drive": "I'm a little on edge because I'm not sure exactly what's going to happen with all this wind. But BMW has assured me that it's all safe." The huge rotor of the wind tunnel slowly starts to turn, from the control centre you can see a gentle breath of air slowly but surely developing into a stiff breeze at 60 km/h. After this windy test drive, the result is clear: the hairstylist on the set is not too happy since the only thing the tousled mane of model and TV presenter Sylvie van der Vaart would be good for is an eighties music video.
The outfit and hair are restyled and we shoot forward into the year 2009: a current 3 Series Convertible now gleams in the light of the wind tunnel. Sylvie van der Vaart appears with a business look - an elegant beige-coloured trouser suit. She smiles into the camera and waxes lyrical about open-top driving in Madrid, where she lives. "Open-top motoring is just the thing for me!" says the 31-year-old. Waiting at the wheel in the wind tunnel, she once again waits in suspense for the next test run as the huge rotors start to move. The improved aerodynamics of the vehicle with reduced air turbulence in the interior is clearly visible to all those on the set. The long, straight hairstyle hardly moves a millimetre. Sylvie van der Vaart smiles as she steps out of the car: "What a difference from the older model! I couldn't feel the wind at all - I even had to check to see if they'd even turned it on."
Shortly after the shoot in Munich, van de Vaart was diagnosed with cancer at an early stage and successfully treated. She quickly started working again - both in the photo studio and on television. "Discipline is very important in my line of work," she says. She quickly got used to wearing a wig, too - and continues to drive open top.
The hairdo experiment illustrates 22 years of progress in automobile development. Facilities such as the new Aerodynamic Test Centre enable engineers of the BMW Group to improve aerodynamics at an early stage of the development process so as to make a contribution to increasingly efficient vehicles. In addition to lightweight construction and drivetrain, aerodynamics has a key role to play in automobiles of the future. Sophisticated aerodynamics is one of the key variables in the BMW Groups EfficientDynamics approach. BMW is a forerunner within the entire automotive industry in terms of the reduction of CO2 emissions. In the EU, the BMW Group's new car fleet of 2008 has an average CO2 emission level of 156 grams per kilometre - well below that of other premium manufacturers.

"Oooooh that ragtop is messing up my hair!" Is BMW targeting the Kardashians or enthusiasts with this type of nonsense? Or does Biff get upset when his salmon colored sweater tied over his shoulders gets jostled by the breeze on the way to the country club?
I don't know how we survive without these hardships.

Other than the Zs, which BMW convertibles have ever been about outright performance? If you want to track your Bimmer, get a hardtop. If you want to have a fun car to drive and look good/be seen in, get the drop. It's a pretty simple equation.

Btw Marc-O (sounds like a model name), this was a produced video, not a random street interview. They had the opportunity to coach, reshoot, and edit what's presented. Given those circumstances, yes I could do a lot better. Anyone could.

My experiences with rag tops, I've had three, is that women, beautiful and otherwise, love the the self image of, and love to be seen in convertibles... they just don't want to be in one with the top down going very fast or very far. It just messes up the hair too darn much, especially if you are on the way to a restaurant or some event.
The tattooed, sunburned biker chicks on the buddy seat, are an exception, based on personal experience.

Geez, I never noticed how much higher the doors are on the E93 than the E30!
That's probably why she couldn't feel any wind... the convertible top is practically just a sunroof on the new one.

Well said on the looks folks. And yeah having been to 120mph in an '87 325 convertible I can confirm that those E30's were windy, but also a lot, LOT more fun.
