Back in June we reported on Ford's plan to offer Mustang body-in-white kits to racers in the fall. So as the leaves begin to change, word comes down from Ford Racing spokesman Jesse Kershaw that the order books are now open for several different competition kits. The body-in-white is available for just $4,995, but in addition to the body, Ford is also offering interior, exterior, seat and roll cage kits. Ford is keeping costs down by limiting the ordering period to eight weeks, and once the ordering period closes on November 15, Ford will build all the bodies in a batch at FoMoCo's Flat Rock, MI plant with deliveries beginning in the first quarter of 2010. Currently Ford is planning to offer the kits on an annual basis to licensed competitors and you can get all the details in the press release below the fold.

Ford Racing offers 2010 Mustang Competition Kits
The 2008 Cobra Jet has lit up the drag racing world, appearing on magazine covers and at drag strips across the country. Already all 2010 Cobra Jet's are spoken for, but the demand for a racer-friendly Competition Kit has been high.
Ford Racing is committed to helping racers get late-model Mustangs out on the track. By pre-ordering and minimizing our inventory costs we are able to offer the best pricing possible on Mustang Competition Kits.
These industry-first kits greatly reduce the complexity and build time typically associated with a body- in-white build. For little more than the competition is offering the body shell alone, the Mustang Competition Kits include interior, exterior (including glass), and seats. Cobra Jet power-train components are also available through the Ford Racing catalog. For full details on what is included in the Mustang Competition Kits please visit fordracingparts.com.

Yeah, I don't think that I'll be able to get to sleep tonight if I don't hear what Matt has to say about this.

$4995? yowzah. i think a bunch of people ought to order these and save them for future restorations. that's dirt cheap.

Wow! For just a second, I thought someone was doing a Frame up restoration on a Plymouth Volare coupe! It's amazing how much bumpers and lights add to the look of a car.

Funny you should mention the Volaré ... Chrysler was using them for the basis of race car kits more than 30 years ago.
Kudos to Ford for offering these kind of prefab kits to amateur racers. I understand GM plans similar offerings for Camaro bodies-in-white in the near future. Trans-Am racing anyone?

where does the term "body-in-white" come from?

Forty-nine-ninety-five? That's a steal, when you consider that a repro '69 Camaro body runs $13k, and AFAIK the $13k doesn't include the front sheetmetal. Wow!

There's something to be said for economy of scale. Over the run of this car, Ford will build a few hundred thousand of these bodies. OTOH, the companies building the reproduction Camaro, Mustang, Jeep, etc bodies are building dozens, maybe hundreds if they're lucky. That's a big difference in tooling amortization.

they are so cheap because they are using the same dies as the production car. probably if you REALLY Wanted to, you could build your own Production mustang! but Ford closed that loophole by only offering these bodies to licensed racers.
Tabajara Labs 3:27PM (9/19/2009)
What loophole? If it has a VIN, it can be licensed, eh? And BTW, you can always buy the parts and build the car you want, or repair a crashed one. BTW again, what does it costs to become a licensed racer?
