Click above for new high-res images of the redesigned Mazdaspeed3

Early last month Mazda previewed the Mazdaspeed3 that will make its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show this week. We were only afforded three images and some salient details, but now just hours before the Swiss show officially begins we have a number of new pics and more information about one of our favorite sport compacts.

Browse the updated high-res gallery below and you'll see that the super smiley face of the new redesigned Mazda3 has been butched up for Mazdaspeed3 duty (the car is called the Mazda3 MPS outside the U.S.). The new car sports a hood scoop that even a Subaru WRX would be proud to wear, as well as its own unique grille trim, round foglamps, a roof-mounted spoiler, rear diffuser and its own set of wheels.

Sources are saying that the new design won't be joined by a new engine, as the same MZR 2.3L direct-inject, turbocharged four-cylinder will be used at launch though with power slightly increased to around 268 horsepower. The only other bit of tech info we have is a rumor that involves the Ford Focus RS. The Focus RS uses a special RevoKnuckle suspension system that virtually eliminates the issue of torque steer for the front-wheel-drive hot hatch, and rumor has it the Mazdaspeed3 may also take advantage of this system. Stay tuned for live coverage of the Geneva Motor Show where we'll meet the new Mazdaspeed3 in person.

You can stay. But the front bumper has got to go.

The smiling grille is silly, the hoodscoop is silly, the rear wing is silly, and the dual exhaust is silly. Did I miss anything? Would rather get an '08.

      Ford (Mazda) Edsel.

Why fix it if it ain't broke?

They ruined this car for me. Not only is it stupid looking with that smiley grille but now they've added a "hey look at me" hood scoop on it. To me, the previous gen's understated looks is what was appealing. You're not going to sneak up on anyone in this monstrousity.

AB changed the picture. I guess the closeup on the grin was just too much.

      let me guess

Mazda made this cur UGLY on purpose to let the WRX owners that this is a direct competitor to that car, including ugliness

this overpower FWD will be the new torque steer monster and together with that ugly grin and rear it's a wonder why Ford didn't just t sell of f all of Mazda

and this time keep the driving comments, I know how to drive thanks, but I hate the feeling overpower FWD cars give you. they plain and simple suck

now where is the AWD system
i think we all know AWD = more wieghts
        that's not the point

AWD for this car should be 200lbs, they can figure a way to reduce 50-80lbs of that somewhere else (considering this is a special cversion of the car) and so with an additional 120lbs and AWD this would be a much better car

that ugliness all over the front and rear don't help much

Exactly how much lighter and quicker is the MS3 than the 2009 WRX???
AWD also = higher cost. If it goes AWD, it's now competing with the WRX/STI, Ralliart/Evo.

Staying FWD, it competes with the Cobalt SS, Civic SI, Golf GTI. So a lower price bracket.
"You" hate FWD, but there are plenty of people that hate AWD, as well.

And, this is not a direct competitor to the WRX. It's not in the same price segment.

@Ligor - now where is the AWD system? It's the 2010 Taurus SHO! LOL!
You've driven the MPS have you?

The torque steer is there but it isn't bad if you are ready for it.

Nothing like the old N12 Nissan Pulsar Exa/NX Turbo. That thing was scary.
Hopefully Mazda upsized the width of the tires. 235/40 18?
The interior looks nice (especially with that funky red trim) which is something that can't be said for the other cars in it's category (except GTI)
I liked the old one better, and sure- it's ugly, but that never stopped Subaru buyers.
Why did they ruin such a good car with that grinning idiot grille?
Looks too mush like a Vibe / Matrix from the side.
