As the '70s finally came to a close, there was just one bastion left for enthusiasts of classic American muscle cars: the Pontiac Trans Am. This is the car that was forever immortalized by Burt Reynolds and the Smokey and the Bandit movie franchise. As if the standard TA wasn't outlandish enough with its Screaming Chicken hood emblem, Pontiac capitalized on the movie's success with a Special Edition model that replicated the black and gold paint scheme of the movie car. This particular example is just about as pristine as you will ever find, having fewer than 500 original miles showing on the odometer. The oil has never been changed, and the original air still pressurizes the original tires. That's got to be worth something, right? Apparently, it's worth exactly $79,200, which is what this one went for after auction fees at this year's festivities here at Barret-Jackson. See the official auction description after the break.

1980 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Bandit Special Edition:

An original car with less than 500 original miles. A special ordered, completely loaded car with all options available at the time. Still has the original paint, decals, tires, oil, belts, hoses and air in the tires.

It was special ordered completely loaded with all options available at the time. It still has original paint, decals, tires, oil, belts, hoses and air in the tires. This is a time capsule opportunity of a lifetime. It is a museum-quality car that is possibly one of the lowest original mile cars on the planet. It is documented with all its original books, papers and PHS (Pontiac Historic Services) verification. This car cannot be replaced. Original cars are only original once.       These where one of the most popular cars in the late 70's and early 80's! and for good reason, for the time, the performance was actually pretty good and their styling was incredible. Of course today's "auto enthusiasts" cant understand that or respect the past for what it was, all they can do is compare it to modern technology and hate on it.

      These cars sold plenty, actually where amongst the highest selling Firebirds ever and their are still plenty around and being restored, hence the low price.

        Or they can compare it to the generation that came before it and scoff. If we're talking about the window of time from say '75-'82 and ignoring everything that came before or since, then yeah... these cars were pretty decent performers.

        But they were castrated versions of the cars that preceded them, and everyone knew it; all the flashy graphics and 'big-engine' badges didn't change the fact that they were absolute dogs. A '71 T/A put out close to 500 lb/ft of torque and well over 300hp and would walk the Bandit's T/A (or this one) any old day of the week.

        Now. Did I want a Trans Am in '77 after my pops took me to see Smokey & the Bandit in the theater? Abso-freaking-lutely. But objectively, these cars were from arguably the worst era of American autos.

        those were SAE "Gross" power ratings. they had little to do with how much power the engine actually made as-installed in the car.

        SAE Net was still ~400lb-ft/300hp (and higher in the '72). In any case, my larger point is that relative to the earlier cars, the late 70s T/As (and Camaros, Vettes, etc.) were slow as balls. You can quibble about SAE net/gross all you like, but a '71/'72 T/A will still walk a '78.

        Very true, heck in most cases, a few of those late 60's early 70's Muscle cars could get into the 13's.

      That's a pretty good investment. Buy it for, what, $6,000? Keep it for 29 years and sell it for 80 grand. Not bad.
      Despite all the disparaging remarks about the "screaming chicken", the TA was a trend-setting and gorgeous vehicle in its day. I certainly lusted after one.

      Pontiac's honeycomb and snowflake wheels started an interest in custom wheels that swept through the automotive design industry and launched an entire aftermarket segment. Before that, sports cars only came with five spoke mags.
      And, it was one of the first cars to have headlights but no grill above the bumper. That's fairly common today, but it wasn't in the late 70's when that design came to market.

      The fourth generation LT1 and LS1 TransAm's of the 90's were much better muscle cars in terms of performance and quality, but those third gen TransAm's were a unique and influential part of automotive design history.

        It may have started a trend, but the original '71-73, pre-5mph bumper front end was far better looking--probably the best-looking Firebird except possibly for the '67-68.

      It's a YearOne limited run restoration. It has a modern LS engine out of a corvette and has been modernized inside and out. Its never had an oil change because the brand new engine making well over 180 horsepower hasn't been in it long.

        I love the turbo read out on the back of the hood scoop on the outside of the car. awesomely 80's.

        I want wheels like this for my Sol GXP.
