Paris 2008: Fiat 500 DIESEL - it's not what you think

Click above for more live shots of the Fiat 500 DIESEL
Perhaps it isn't the most interesting live reveal that took place in Paris, but we managed to get a few shots of the new Fiat 500 by DIESEL anyway. Yes, there is an optional 75-horsepower 1.3 Multijet diesel engine, complete with a particulate filter to keep things squeaky clean, but that's not why it's called the DIESEL edition. That moniker comes from the Italian clothing company, which lends its name and the styling talents of DIESEL head designer with a head Lars Schwartz. Outside, the 500 is painted in your choice of Green DIESEL, Brown DIESEL or Black DIESEL. Name recognition much? Surely the most striking bit of kit is inside, where the seats are upholstered in denim with contrasting stitching. Fortunately, the look is much more upscale than that of the Levi's Gremlins and Jeans Beetles of the '70s. Proof is in our complete gallery below.

I'd drive one in a heartbeat, unless I could get my hands on the Abarth SS version. :)

At first I wasn't sure that I would like it, but the interior works for this particular car. This would also work well in the Ka (obviously, built on the 500s platform, but still).

So, it is called a Diesel edition, but it doesn't necessarily have a diesel engine in it? Who was the marketing moron who came up with that. I wonder how many idiots are going to accidently pump diesel into their gasoline tanks.
This reminds me of when turbo-prop airplains came out and so there was confusion as to whether the plain had a turbine engine or a turbo-charges reciprocating engine and plains crashed because the wrong fuel was pumped in.
Anyway, I don't see what is so pleasing to the eye about this little car anyhow. It looks like a vacuum cleaner sans the handle.

Fiat is an Italian autogroup.
Diesel, S.P.A. is a well-known Italian clothing company.
Diesel engines seem to be the preferred engine choice throughout Europe.
Since Fiat and Diesel are both sold in Europe and the Fiat 500 Diesel Edition is available with the preferable diesel engine, it is likely that those interested in the Diesel Edition Fiat 500 are completely aware which fuel to put into their tanks.
With all due respect, I'm sure European 500 owners would think you are the likely idiot here for thinking they're that stupid...

OMG you must be such an American moron! No offense for the others
tho! But I think he is only aware of 5 meters long American cars with
V8 engines!

uh, you know diesel filler guns won't fit in gasoline filler caps, right? The nozzle is bigger, see..

Jake: sounds like you didn't read the article.
Flea: true, but it still miraculously happens sometimes.

First of all, the blog states this "Yes, there is an optional 75-horsepower 1.3 Multijet diesel engine,..." An OPTIONAL diesel engine. I know that there is also this diesel fashion brand, but there is the chance that this will confuse people and they will probably go all class-action if it happens enough.
Yes, I know that diesel nozzles are larger than gasoline nozzles. When you make something idiot proof, society produces a better idiot. I have know people who managed to accidentally pump diesel into their gasoline tank before.
I love how certain Europeans are so far up their own arse, that they call people who don't appreciate the beauty of thier crappy little econo-hatches, morons. It is a plain little econo car, it isn't all that impressive. Sorry I don't like your EuroJUNK.

Daniel, sounds as though you didn't read the article.

Theo...seriously...insulting America and then acting like you didn't apply it to everyone really doesn't work.
Just call the commenter a moron and leave my country out of it. Thanks.

I generally prefer brunettes, but that blonde is spectacular! Oh yeah, the car is nice as well.

If that car is brought over here I predict it will be a sensation like the Mini Cooper.
Be kinda cool to see a dealership that sells Minis,Fiat 500's and Smarts.Betcha they'd do well.
