We've seen a lot of cool technology coming out of the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, but few gadgets are more useful or cool than this dual-view navigation screen from Delphi. When out of Park, the driver can only see navigation or radio controls on the nav screen, but a passenger riding shotgun can watch a movie. The driver can't even lean over to see the other view while driving, as Delphi employed special blocking technology to keep its invention from causing accidents. One screen with two simultaneous uses is good stuff. Check out Engadget's embedded YouTube clip of the technology in action after the jump.
Well I don't know about you guys but I think that is brilliant. I hope we see this in production cars because this is a great gadget for families. Just makes life that much better.
Good question but the trend seems to be going towards multiple screens even in passenger sedans so there would probably be a headrest, center console, or drop down screen to watch.
How long before some tool puts a mirror on the passenger side so he can see the video while driving, has a wreck and finds an ambulance-chaser willing to sue Delphi?

I'm sure my (admittedly snarky) comment on how much a) americans love to be distracted from their driving and b) how popular lawsuits are as a hobby contributed at least as much to the automotive discourse as your whining about my comment did.
bloody HELL! I try to post, get a blank white screen, go back to the original post, refresh to see if it actually posted, no post, do it again, double post! This has happened to me 3x in 2 days, but was a new experience yesterday. Firefox 2.0.0.11, no exotic plug-ins.

This isn't that new. Eclipse has had a unit that could do this for a while now (albeit only available in Japan).

Finally, a good reason to let someone else drive.

If Dell ever develops this technology for their desktop monitors, I'm investing in some online porn stock.

Very nice. Would be great tech for boss/coworkers to see an Excel spreadsheet MOVIE, while I post on autoblog! :)
Alex @ Jan 11th 2008 10:17AM
maybe its because i don't have kids but i would be a little more than pissed if my passenger is ignoring me so they can watch a movie.
Loiosh dé Taltos @ Jan 11th 2008 11:21AM
I am happy just listening to a movie instead of viewing it. I wished they allowed that without me having to unlock the unit. Thanks Alpine!
