58,000 German Smarts recalled

Smart fotwo models that were produced between October 1998 and December 2000 have been recalled for axle supporting joints that may rust. DaimlerChrysler has been aware of the problem for some time and introduced a new version of the axel in 2000. Smart has packed away money to pay for the replacement of the parts so it will not face any additional financial burdens from the recall. The recall may spread to other countries other than Germany, but a Smart spokesman was not aware of how many more cars were affected.
