SEBASTIAN BLANCO: Hello, everyone, and welcome to an intimate edition of On Location. I'm Sebastian Blanco. I'm here, coming to you from inside of a Tesla Model S in Phoenix, Arizona. Now, why am I in a Model S and in what looks like my pajamas, my Autoblog pajamas?
I'm here because this is the Tesla Model S that is available on Airbnb. It's been decked out for the occasion here with an air mattress and some nice clean sheets. It's actually quite comfortable-- plenty of room to stretch out.
And the nice thing about sleeping in an electric car all night is that you don't need to worry about fumes. You can just leave it running and use the heat, use the air conditioning, use the music-- whatever you like. And the way to do that in the Model S is to shift it to neutral and then engage the parking brake. If you just put it in park and leave it on, the car will turn off automatically in about half an hour.
So my host, who slept in his car before, and has had at least one other guest stay here in the Airbnb, Tesla Model S-- he says that an eight-hour shift of the car being on and running and providing heat or cold, only uses about 17 or 18 miles of range, which is his equivalent of about $1 worth of electricity.
So with all of that, I think it's time to catch some zzz's, go to bed, and enjoy this Tesla in a way that it was never designed for, but seems to work quite well.
