Lenny Robinson, the Maryland philanthropist who visited sick children throughout the area dressed as Batman, is killed in a car accident on Interstate 70.

Tragedy struck during a monster truck demonstration at a car show in Haaksbergen, Netherlands, when the massive vehicle (pictured above) seemingly lost control and crashed into spectators. The calamity resulted in three fatalities and many injuries among bystanders.

Severe thunderstorms devastated fans hanging around trying to enjoy the post-race atmosphere at the Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania over the weekend. The NASCAR Pocono 400 Sprint Cup race itself had been halted 98 laps into the 160-lap event because of rain, and track officials twice warned spectators that severe thunderstorms were on the way and to find shelter.

Tragedy struck this weekend's Las Vegas Indy 300, as driver Dan Wheldon, 33, died from injuries sustained in a gruesome 15-car wreck just 13 laps into the race. Wheldon's car sailed through the air outside turn two and smashed into a wall.

It's always tragic when people die from automotive accidents, especially when they've barely started their lives. Last month, four teen from Wakefield High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, were killed when the driver's Mazda RX-8 slammed into a concrete barrier. In response, the high school, the Wakefield Forest police department, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) have gathered together to put on a safe-driving fair this weekend.
