If the prospect of “more rugged” fits into your truck-buying ethos this year and the idea of a Land Rover is a bit too “unpretty” for mild off-roading, consider the new 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition. It certainly looks the part. Debuting today in public at the VW stand at the New York International Auto Show, the Atlas Peak is an exercise in mobile design accoutrements: a gloss-black “X” design element stretches across the lower fascia, borrowed from Atlas Cross Sport. Two chrome strips pop on an otherwise blacked-out grille, flowing to either side of the illuminated logo. Want new colors? Avocado Green and Pure Grey are exclusive to this model. Black mirror caps, window surrounds, wheel arches and roof rails complete the black-out look in profile. Not enough décor? The Peak Edition logo on the side of the quarter panel is orange and chrome, and at the rear, a black tailgate strip meets a rugged black and silver diffuser with chrome exhaust bezels. In the cabin, VW explains, is “Titan Black leatherette paired with light grey accents and orange contrast stitching. Dash and door inserts in a black metallic check pattern further set the look apart from the rest of the Atlas family.” There’s a steering wheel clip bearing the same logo as the exterior badging and ambient lighting with 30 color choices The Peak Edition takes its cues from a concept called the Basecamp Camping model that was shown previously at the SEMA show. The basis of that example was a VR6-equipped Atlas SEL with the Basecamp appearance package, which adds fender flares, rocker panels and bumper additions. It also picked up Fifteen52 wheels VW sells, plus an H&R Springs suspension lift kit, wheel spacers and all-terrain tires. VW promises more details on the SUV at the launch this summer. ZAC PALMER: Zac Palmer with Autoblog here. We're at the Volkswagen stand at the New York Auto Show. And Volkswagen brought this Atlas Peak edition to New York. So this is sort of a rugged-looking Atlas that we have here that will be available eventually for the refreshed Atlas line. There are a few exterior changes and interior changes that I'll walk you guys through. Namely up front, the grille gets a slightly massaged look in addition to the lower grill and the side intakes with some silver trim, some more black painted trim.

It just gives it a little more of an upscale and rugged look, so to speak. You also get this unique sort of grayish green paint. I think it's really neat. Sort of it feels like very nature like, like it'll blend in in a forest or something like that. But along the side, we get some cooler accents and whatnot. So these tires, they have a really neat rugged look to them. They're not great all terrains or anything like that. But they would be good on a fire road or something a little more intense than just your standard dirt road.

You got some interesting unique wheels that go along with it, some black body cladding. Of course, it gives it that off-road look. And maybe most dramatic of all, we have this big old Peak edition logo. It's in orange, you got some mountain peaks in there. It just really calls it out as what it is, a more off-road-oriented Atlas. Now before we hop inside, let's walk all the way to the back and see the couple changes that they made back here.

So namely, the biggest thing is this lower area has been revised. You get a new silver strip there. And also the diffuser-like space has been massaged. Just give it a little more aggressive, a little more noticeable look. The Peak edition badge isn't back here. You'll have to look on the side for that. But let's hop in the interior next.

Welcome inside the Atlas Peak edition. So you have a number of interior accents that calls this out as the vehicle that it is. Namely right in front of you, you have a Peak edition logo on the steering wheel. Again, that orange and white look. It's really neat. The seats themselves are a two tone. So you get this black with the nice quilting and gray accents. And also, the orange theme continues with some nice orange contrast stitching on the seats, your nice big armrest here, and on the dash itself. A lot of really nice soft touch surfaces.

One of my favorite touches of this whole model here, though, is this dash right here where you sort of get a speckled orange look with the Peak edition name right there on it. I think that that's just a really nice and classy touch that the new Atlas' interior deserves, because well, it's a lot nicer in here than the previous generation Atlas ever was. And that right there is the Atlas Peak edition. Will be available later this year for the refreshed 2024 Atlas.
