New York governor Andrew Cuomo and his state government have a goal to to drop carbon emissions 40 percent by 2030 compared to the levels they were at in 1990. In a move to help achieve these goals, New York just announced it has several plans of action that include cheaper charging rates, better charging accessibility, and more rebates for vehicles with electric powertrain components.
As part of the overall initiative, dubbed EVolve NY, the New York Power Authority (NYPA) is using part of the designated $250 million to introduce 200 new 150-kW DC fast chargers. The chargers, which can charge cars in as little as 20 minutes, will be appropriately placed in the most trafficked places in the state, including five major cities outside of New York City, along major highways such as Interstate 90 and Interstate 87, and at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Cuomo wants to install 10,000 chargers throughout the state by 2021. For now, each location will have four charging stations, with each hub an average of 75 miles apart. JFK will start will only 10 chargers. More information on the first 32 locations can be found here.
The second portion of the plan improves EV owners' home experiences. Using time-of-use rates, the Public Service Commission (PSC) wants to ensure people charging their cars during off-peak hours are not paying more than the standard rates. This will benefit both the users as well as the grid and the load it deals with from the charging the EVs.
The final piece of the initiative should help push more people to buy EVs. According to the state, it has already approved more than 11,000 rebates, which equates to more than $15 million. This is part of a program called the Drive Clean Rebate, which offers up to $2,000 of rebates on more than 40 different vehicle models.

The push toward the EV future will be a slow and steady build, but individual state planning such as the initiative seen here is vital to make it happen. As a state with one of the biggest cities in the world, New York needs to be a leader in this sector, and this is a small but important step.
