[00:00:00] Hey everybody. Welcome inside the 2016 Mercedes-AMG G65. This is a V12-powered four wheel-drive off-road monster. I'm Greg Migliore and in this daily driver we're going to take it for a spin. The G-Wagon, the Gelandewagen, is one of Mercedes' longest running nameplates. It's one of the longest running nameplates in automotive history. This car has basically been around since 1979.

[00:00:30] Now we're driving the V12-powered version which means you get 621 horsepower and 738 pound feet of torque under the hood. It's a beast.

It's so powerful you can hear it every time you jab the throttle. It's quite an experience to drive a V12 engine. Especially in an off-road vehicle. All that power is put to the ground, the pavement, or wherever you might be with the four-wheel drive system.

[00:01:00] This car also has three different locking discs in the dashboard. It's really catered to the off-road crowd. That's why they're right there where you would be more likely to find HVAC, radio, or entertainment buttons in a normal vehicle.

One of my favorite parts of this vehicle is the design. This is like a German Jeep Wrangler. When you look at it there's no mistaking exactly what this is. It's purposeful. It's strong. You know the fenders kind of jump out at you.

[00:01:30] You got the big lights and it's just to me, this is like, it's a very macho vehicle.

As far as the interior, it's pretty luxurious. We've got the quilted sort of diamond patterned seats. This one's done up in a red and black theme. I like that. It gives a sporty feel to this off-road-themed vehicle. Otherwise it's pretty simple. It's pretty clean. It's got the stitching. You've got the gauges in front of you. Infotainment system right there.

[00:02:00] Basically everything you need is where you'd expect it. In a vehicle like that this, that can be intimidating to drive, it's all pretty intuitive. The layout, the buttons, the knobs, basically everything's where you would expect it to be.

You're probably wondering how does this drive? This is vehicle that dates from another time that's got V12 power. It's actually pretty reasonable to drive. The brakes are good and stout. I've got an excellent view of the road which gives you a lot of confidence. The one thing that I think is going to be a challenge for someone who's not used to driving a vehicle like this is the steering is pretty heavy.

[00:02:30] This is a big vehicle. It's kind of a flying or rolling box so it's shaped a little differently. Just handling it is a little unusual to someone who might not be used to this.

Now as you might imagine this vehicle isn't great on gas. Checking at the Monroney tells me that I would spend about $4,100 per year on fuel on this thing. It's a good thing that gas is fairly cheap right now.

[00:03:00] Just the whole notion of what is a Mercedes G65 vehicle. I mean what does that mean in 2016? Well it's a status symbol. This one costs $224,000. It's a ton of money. This is like buying an expensive watch. If you buy this you want people to know, hey, I've got money and I have a certain kind of taste and I want to stand out. There's no doubt you will stand out when you drive this vehicle.

[00:03:30] There you have it. The 2016 Mercedes-AMG G65. You've got V12 power and four-wheel-drive capability all wrapped up in a package from another time. For Autoblog I'm Greg Migliore. [00:03:47]
