SEBASTIAN BLANCO: Hi, I'm Sebastian Blanco, editor in chief of Autoblog Green.
MICHAEL GORMAN: My name is Michael Gorman. I am the editor in chief of Engadget.
SEBASTIAN BLANCO: We're up here in Petoskey, Michigan, testing out vehicles for the 2016 Autoblog Tech Of The Year.
MICHAEL GORMAN: What you see here is a beautiful blue Corvette. But I am not here to talk about how fast it is, or how awesome it drives. What we're here to talk about is what's on the inside, Apple CarPlay.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
SEBASTIAN BLANCO: So for example, if you want to play music, all you have to do is plug the cable into the car, plug the other end into your phone. And the first time you do it, give the permission to the phone to talk to the car. After that, the screen becomes basically like an extension of your phone.
So hey, I want to play music. You touch the music button just like you would when it's on your phone. And then it very easy to see, even when you're driving. A screen shows up with big buttons. There is a home button here that you're used to from your phone as well. So I think you're getting the idea, that everything here replicates what's on your phone, just in a much more simplified manner.
MICHAEL GORMAN: So with CarPlay, basically, you can use apps and things inside your car. Instead of having to pick up the tiny little screen on your phone, you've got a nice big infotainment screen in the dashboard. And it gives you access to most of the things on your phone inside your car. You can make calls. You can see text messages. All those kinds of things, then also access other apps.
SEBASTIAN BLANCO: So for example, the maps app here. There's a little bit of a delay as it's looking for things. But it's pulling data from your phone rather than from the car system. It offers you the direction that you're pointed, as well as a map view here. And then if you want to do any sort of destinations or zoom in or zoom out, you pinch the screen. And then options will pop up.
MICHAEL GORMAN: It's the same thing we've seen in other cars, but we've finally got it in Chevrolet. It works really well. It's pretty much what you would expect. So all you iPhone users out there, now you've got another reason to buy a Chevrolet.
SEBASTIAN BLANCO: I've used Apple CarPlay in a couple of different vehicles now. And I find it is the simplest best way to integrate what I'm used to using on a daily basis with my phone into the different cars that we drive.
MICHAEL GORMAN: So that's it. That's all. We're here in beautiful Petoskey, Michigan doing the car Tech Of The Year testing. And that's all we've got for Apple CarPlay. So we'll see you all next time.
SEBASTIAN BLANCO: For Autoblog, I'm Sebastian Blanco.
