ALEX KIERSTEIN: Hi. I'm senior editor Alex Kierstein.
DAVID GLUCKMAN: Hi, I'm David Gluckman with Autoblog here at the 2016 Tech Of The Year testing.
ALEX KIERSTEIN: Today, I'll be looking at the 2016 BMW 7 Series and its gesture control technology.
So BMW's implementation of this gesture control technology is actually pretty slick. It works really well now. I think drivers are going to find it most useful for some of the functions they don't do frequently.
For example, when I'm driving, I don't accept or reject many calls. I just don't get many calls in the car. So taking my hand off the wheel and making a natural gesture. This gesture declines the call. That gesture would accept the call. Those are natural. And I think I would use those frequently.
DAVID GLUCKMAN: It's a neat implementation of a new concept. But one of the main controls it has is that you can kind of go like this, which makes you kind of look like a crazy person. But you can go like this, and change the radio volume. And of all the things in the car that I think are difficult to do, I think the volume knob is one of the more simple. So I'm kind of confused as to why they decided to augment the volume knob with this swirly motion that works most of the time.
ALEX KIERSTEIN: The other one that you can program to one of several functions is the two finger point. I've got this one programmed to take me back to the office. That's also very useful. I think it'll be up to the driver to determine which functions they find the most useful. And they're all there. And they're all intuitive.
DAVID GLUCKMAN: So that's my take on a 2016 BMW 7 Series. For Autoblog, I'm David Gluckman.
ALEX KIERSTEIN: We've just taken a look at the gesture control technology in the 2016 BMW 7 Series. For Autoblog, I'm Alex Kierstein.
