When it comes to large, heavy-duty pickup trucks, the 2012 Ford F-250 only has two competitors – the Chevrolet Silverado HD and the Dodge Ram 2500/3500. Though the F-250 doesn’t outperform the Ram in the towing department, it certainly holds its own everywhere else.
While the 6.2-liter V8 option is great, we’re especially impressed with Ford’s 6.7-liter V8 turbo diesel engine. It has one of the highest towing ratings in the business. Our other favorite feature has to be the King Ranch Trim option, which combines great looks with a very comfortable interior.
Changes for 2012
The PowerStroke turbo diesel engine got upgrades in both torque and horsepower. The 2012 model also comes with a gooseneck hitch, and you can get it with a 6’9” box, too.
What We Like
We really like driving this truck. Unlike others in its class, driving the F-250 doesn’t feel like driving a heavy-duty truck. It’s much more comfortable and has a surprisingly plush ride for a truck with so much towing capacity.
What Concerns Us
Ford doesn’t give fuel efficiency ratings for either engine type for the 2012 F-250, so you can probably expect this truck to spend a good chunk of gas. If you don’t actually need a heavy-duty truck, you might want to go for the F-150 instead.
Models and Specs
In 2012, Ford offered the F-250 in regular cab, SuperCab, and crew cab options with a choice of two engines:
- Engine – 6.2-liter V8
- Power – 385 HP at 5500 RPM
- Torque – 405 lb-ft at 4500 RPM
- Engine – 6.7-liter V8 twin turbo diesel
- Power – 400 HP at 2800 RPM
- Torque – 800 lb-ft at 1600 RPM
Some models manufactured in September 2011 have been recalled due to a safety concern with the transmission. With these the truck can be shifted out of park and into neutral or drive without depressing the brake pedal. This can increase the chances of accidents and injuries.
The 2012 F-250 seems to have only one common issue reported by owners. Some drivers complain that the suspension does not work properly, and a few have reported that their trucks shake and experience wheel chatter under normal circumstances. This is not a common problem, but it’s something to look out for when you start shopping.
