Watch Robbie Maddison go surfing on a dirtbike

We tend to take certain things for granted. For example, surf boards go on the water, and dirt bikes go on, well... dirt. Right? Apparently nobody told that to Robbie Maddison. Or if they did, he doesn't appear to have wanted to listen. And glad we are for it.

The Australian dirt bike rider and surfer is known as Maddo, and after watching this latest video, we'd say that nickname is rather fitting. Put together (or at least promoted) by the same DC Shoes outfit behind many of Ken Block's Gymkhana videos, the clip shows what happened when Maddison and his team modified a dirt bike to ride the waters of the Pacific Ocean around Tahiti in French Polynesia.

Sounds like a pipe dream, right? That's what Maddo and company called the project, and with good reason. Not only does it seem like an impossible feat, but it takes the daredevil beyond still waters and into the pipe of a tidal wave. It's crazy stuff, but it's also one of the most artfully shot and produced videos that we've seen in some time. But don't take our word for it: Check out the action for yourself in the video above and the behind-the-scenes preview in the clip below. Just be prepared to have your mind blown – and wonder, like we did, why he didn't just take a jet ski. (Hint: the answer may very well be because that wouldn't be as awesome.)
