Elon Musk's ex-wife, Justine, says obsession is key to being great

The Internet can be a nasty place full of hatefulness and negativity, but you really see the medium's positive power to connect people when a story like this comes along. A user on the question answering website Quora wrote: "how can I be as great as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Richard Branson?" An eloquent response came from an intriguing source: Justine Musk – Elon's ex-wife.

Musk paints the world of billionaires as far from perfect with little sleep, long hours, endless frustration and not necessarily much happiness. It takes an obsessive personality to be willing to go through all this. "These people tend to be freaks and misfits who were forced to experience the world in an unusually challenging way," she writes. "They developed strategies to survive, and as they grow older they find ways to apply these strategies to other things, and create for themselves a distinct and powerful advantage."

The New York Times spoke with Musk about her response, and the inspiration to write it came because the question was something she had been thinking about. "I wasn't specifically talking about Elon," Justine said to the newspaper. Although, the Tesla boss did apparently weigh in and emailed her that the answer was "well said." You can read Justine's entire reply here, and her interview with the NYT that goes deeper is also worth a look.
