The Indian capital of Delhi has banned the ride-sharing service Uber from operating within the city after a female passenger alleges a driver raped her, sparking protests in the city.
"The transport department has banned all activities related to providing of any transport service by www.uber.com with immediate effect. The department has also blacklisted the company from providing any transport service in the NCT of Delhi in future," the government said in a statement obtained by The Times of India.
A Delhi court officially charged the accused rapist, Shiv Kumar Yadav, on Monday. The court is considering taking action for Uber's failure to run a background check on its drivers, after it was discovered that Yadav was arrested for sexual assault three years ago.
Delhi police told Reuters that the driver dropped the victim at home after the attack, warning her not to talk about the incident. The victim managed to snap a picture of the driver's vehicle and note his driver number, and used it to alert the authorities.
Ahead of the ban, Uber founder Travis Kalanick, issued the following statement, obtained by The Times of India:
