A patent filing has revealed that General Motors, in partnership with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), is indeed developing a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission for front-wheel drive applications. It's rumored that this trans will eventually find its way into The General's passenger car models like the four-door Chevrolet Cruze and the upcoming Cruze hatchback.
The tranny was revealed in conjunction with GM-SAIC's turbocharged, direct-injected gasoline engines that displace between 1.0 or 1.5 liters, suggesting that the seven-speed box will be engineered to work with those mills. The patent filing does not indicate the dual-clutch's horsepower or torque capacity and it's not clear which GM models will come packing the high-tech trans.
