Earlier this year,
Citroen announced plans to
revive the DS badge for a line of premium models. The first car we saw with the new nomenclature was the DS3 concept that was shown at the
Geneva Motor Show in March. That MINI-challenger will be joined by a larger DS5, which is likely to get a
diesel hybrid version in 2011. The diesel hybrid will be the same
HYbrid4 powertrain system that is
coming to the Peugeot 3008 crossover next year.
The HYbrid4 system was first shown in several concepts at last year's Paris Motor Show. Unlike other hybrids on the market already, this is a through-the-road hybrid with no mechanical connection between the internal combustion and electric drive systems. Underhood lies a diesel engine that drives the front wheels while an electric motor and lithium ion battery are mounted at the rear to provide on-demand all-wheel-drive as well as electric-only operation at lower speeds.
