How would you like to have a mid-sized sedan or station wagon that gets over 57 mpg (U.S.)? That's exactly what Volkswagen has unveiled in Paris as the Passat BlueMotion II. It's being shown as a further evolution of the latest Passat BlueMotion, part of VW's lineup of cars optimized for low CO2 emissions. With a common rail diesel engine that uses SCR after-treatment to the meet the 2013 EURO VI emissions standard, the CO2 emissions are rated at only 109 g/km. In addition to the clean diesel engine, the Passat gets aerodynamic tweaks, longer gear ratios and an automatic start stop system. So far, there is no word on when the BlueMotion II will hit production, but for a car as big as the Passat to get that kind of mileage is phenomenal. Yes, I know the EU mileage rates skew high, but real world is still likely to be in the upper 40s, so sign me up.

Wolfsburg / Paris, 01 October 2008 - Never before did a Passat have better fuel economy. Never before was a Passat cleaner. Never before was there a Passat that consumes just 4.1 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers, thereby reducing CO2 emissions to only 109 g/km. Now it does exist: the Passat Variant BlueMotion II. This Volkswagen already fulfills the Euro-6 standard for the year 2014. This sensational low-emissions and fuel efficient car is still a concept. Yet, an initial stage of our CO2 roadmap – at 114 g/km CO2 – will already be going into production next year, as will the new generation of the Golf BlueMotion (CO2 emissions: 99 g/km). This means that Volkswagen is offering the best models in the compact and mid classes when it comes to emissions too.

The Chairman of the Board of Volkswagen AG continues: "BlueMotion shows just how to make conventional – and therefore affordable – cars extremely economical by applying clever drive technologies and special aerodynamic modifications. The BlueTDI concept shows, in parallel, how a high-tech emissions system can further reduce emissions using a SCR catalytic converter. When the two of these are packaged together in a car, entirely new possibilities emerge: the 4.1 liters fuel consumption and over 1,700 kilometer range of the large Passat Variant demonstrate the potential of our drive technologies impressively."
Some of the features adopted from the latest Passat BlueMotion (also debuting in Paris) are its aerodynamic modifications, new Automatic Start/Stop system, common rail TDI and transmission with longer gear ratios. The Passat BlueTDI, another world premiere being shown in Paris, contributes the SCR catalytic converter together with AdBlue additive to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx). For the first time on a Volkswagen, a system is being used to recover braking energy (regeneration); it is able to relieve the engine and further improve fuel economy.
In sum, the overall technology package of the Passat BlueMotion II concept car reduces fuel consumption by an additional 0.8 liters per 100 kilometers compared to the normal version of the Passat Variant BlueMotion, which is already extremely economical. At the same time, CO2 emissions are reduced by 20 g/km. Volkswagen will also be offering the production version of the Passat BlueMotion II as a sedan and as a Variant.
