Diesel-hybrid tugboat to be built for Long Beach port

The Los Angeles/Long Beach harbor area has been under fire in past years for the enormous amounts of pollution emitted from the boats and trucks operating there. Recently the ports adopted a Clean Air Action plan. The goals include getting rid of older diesel trucks that have no clean technology and requiring ships to use low-sulfur fuel and shore-side electricity.
Now the Port of Long Beach has announced that it will sponsor the building of the first hybrid tugboat. Estimated to be an $8 million boat, compared to a regular $3 million tug, the boat will use diesel power for the hard work and rely on electric propulsion when idling. Foss Maritime will build the boat, which is expected to hit the water in 2008.
