Students convert classic sports cars to electric drive

Training technicians for future hybrid and EV applications needs to start now. The students at Shenandoah Valley Governor's School in Virginia are busy converting a 1981 Porsche 911 and a 1971 Datsun 240Z to electric power. Both cars recently took home trophies from the Battery Beach Burnout, an electric-car drag race and show.

Some of the students attend the class for credit with hopes in obtaining an engineering degree. One former student oversees motorsports at his univeristy, including EV racers. Others see the project as a hobby.
