DCX expanding PHEV testing with Sprinter vans

While plug-in hybrids are still concept for cars, there are four PHEV Sprinter vans running on the streets now. It's part of a test program that eventually will see more than 20 Dodge Sprinters in the program. Not all are the same configuration as battery development continues. The most promising setup is lithium ion, which is half the weight of nickel-metal hydride. The Sprinters can drive up to 20 miles on electric-only power. The driver can switch manually or leave it up to automatic operation. Both diesel and gas engines are used in the tests.
