Canada sets new targets for biofuels use

Canadian Environment Minister Rona Ambrose announced new requirements for biofuel use over the next few years. By 2010, five percent of the content of gasoline has to consist of renewable fuels such as ethanol and all diesel and heating oil has to be at least two percent renewable by 2012. That amounts to over 550 million gallons of ethanol and 160 million gallons of biodiesel. The new regulations are expected to take up to two years to implement after being introduced in parliament early next year. The government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Agri-Food, will also be providing C$345 million of assistance to farmers and farm communities for the development of biofuels and related products.
