Around the world in 24 tanks

PR Newswire reports a British man and his Australian wife managed a trip around the globe on only 24 tanks of gas. Their initial target was to do it in less than 50 tanks. It’s interesting to note that the vehicle was a bone stock Volkswagen Golf 1.6 FSI, a standard gasoline powered vehicle. Their overall fuel economy for the trip was an impressive 52.3 miles per gallon, quite a bit higher than what the owner’s manual quotes (34.4 mpg). The secret to their success is a set of driving tips to minimize fuel consumption. They all make perfect sense, but they might make driving a little boring. The car also used a new gasoline formulation, which reduces engine friction. What I really want to know is how many times the wife made her husband ask for directions.
