Modernized AMC wins Car Craft's RSE contest

/

Back in September, we told you that Car Craft had narrowed down the field for its Real Street Eliminator competition to seven vehicles. The tire smoke has now cleared, the broken parts swept off the track (that thing to the right used to be a Corvette halfshaft) and a winner has emerged - Peter Mungo and his '69 AMC AMX technology-retrofit exercise won the event.

Even though the autocross event (a likely strong point of Mungo's creation) was rained out, the AMX was still able to clinch a win based on its excellent performance in the quarter-mile (10.64@132 mph), an eyeball-popping 60-0 mph braking distance of only 101 feet, and of course strong showings in the static judging and ride-and-drive evaluation.

Bill Salie's '99 Camaro SS placed second, and John Garner's '90 Mustang GT took home third place.
