Popular Mechanics picks technologies to watch in 2006

Popular Mechanics has come out with an early New Year's present from its January issue, giving us some light reading over the holiday weekend. Its "15 New Tech Concepts You'll Need to Know in 2006" provides just a few automotive examples, but they're goodies.

At the top of the list is Toyota's Driver Monitoring System, which has a small camera installed on the steering column that monitors your eyes as you're driving to make sure they stay on the road. The list also mentions blind spot detection sensors and a pedestrian protection system (PPS), which, in the event that you accidentally hit somebody, raises up the hood to cushion the poor soul's landing on the engine block.

Thanks to Tim for the tip.
