Delphi unions unite to fight cost-cutting plan

Reuters reports today that unions representing nearly all of Delphi's hourly workers have joined forcees in the Mobilizing@Delphi coalition to fight the company's proposed wage and benefit cuts.

The unions include the UAW, IUE-CWA, United Steelworkers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the International Association of Machinists and the International Union of Operating Engineers. In a statement issued today, union leaders said, "We are outraged by Delphi's attempt to use the bankruptcy process to dictate the radical destruction of the living standards of America's industrial workers…"

Delphi has said it will start the process to reject its labor contracts if it hasn't reached agreement with the unions by mid-December.

The unions represent about 33,650 of Delphi's 34,750 hourly workers. The company employs about 50,000
