Lightweight Land Rover

Michael at The Land Rover Chronicles pointed us to this interesting pre-BMW Land Rover concept vehicle. Built in 1997, the LCV2/3 (Light Concept Vehicle) was part of a multi-year project investigating lightweight vehicles for better off-road performance and improved fuel economy.

The LCV2/3 features a bonded and riveted aluminum spaceframe, and aluminum body panels. Powered by a 2.5 liter V6, the pickup-style bodywork was given a modest aerodynamic treatment to improve on-road gas mileage. I'm guessing the 2/3 designation refers to the rather uncomfortable-looking 2- or 3-across seating configuration.
