Design a car | The List #0030

Our hosts on The List have driven just about every type of vehicle you can think of. From decades-old beaters, to go-karts, to top-of-the-line supercars, there's one thing all cars have in common: design. In this episode, Patrick and Jessi learn the vehicle design process from start to finish and try their hand at designing their very own car at the Art Center College of Design.

The duo begin their design adventure by sitting down with two students of the college, Tony and Monica, to grab some pointers and get started. Initially, Jessi and Patrick weren't expecting to have the same ideas, but they began to realize that they could combine their mad genius to create one awesome vehicle.

Starting with just a pen and paper (and the guidance of Tony and Monica), our hosts get to work sketching out ideas. After Patrick mentions he wants the car to be "sleek" and "silent," Jessi is instantly inspired and brings forth the idea of the ninja. From that point on, "ninja" was the theme.

Several attempts later, a sketch was finally completed, and it was time to move on to the clay model. While sculpting away, the initial sketches for the car, now called the NJA, were sent to an artist to be rendered in 3D. Surprisingly, Jessi and Patrick seem to get the hang of sculpting much faster than sketching. After finishing the clay model, it was time to see the 3D model of the glorious NJA, and of course make a classic '80s-style commercial for this new automotive powerhouse.
