If you thought Formula One racing had a checkered history in America, well – you're right. Over the years, the United States Grand Prix has been held in more locations and has suffered from more hiatuses than a drug addicted musician's touring schedule. But a good portion of that drama has been played out in New York. Upstate, Watkins Glen hosted the United States Grand Prix for longer than any other single location, but the past few decades have also seen efforts to bring an F1 race to New York City.

That idea first came up in the early 80s, but seemed to have gained more traction in recent years. As you may recall, a bid was floated a couple of years ago to build a circuit at Liberty State Park (the piece of New Jersey extending behind the Statue of Liberty), but that failed after local residents protested the idea and the race was awarded instead to the Circuit of the Americas being built in Austin, Texas. Then a new project came up that would see an F1 race – backed by private investment instead of public funds – held between the New Jersey municipalities of Weehawken and West New York that would be easily accessible from the city while offering the Manhattan skyline as the backdrop.

The Wall Street Journal now reports that the latter project has been approved and is set to be announced on Tuesday. The report further projects that the race is already scheduled for June 2013, joining the United States Grand Prix already set for Austin on the same calendar.

If that's the way things shake out, it won't be the first time the U.S. plays host to multiple F1 races in the same year, as two American grands prix were commonly held in the 1970s and 80s at such locations as Watkins Glen, Las Vegas, Dallas, Detroit and Long Beach, highlighted by the 1982 Formula One World Championship that actually featured three grands prix in the United States (plus a fourth in Canada).

While those races played with a variety of names, New York Grand Prix sounds about right to us. However the WSJ indicates that the Jersey race could take the name Grand Prix of America, while the Austin race is set to carry the name United States Grand Prix. Whatever they want to call it, F1 racing is poised for a big comeback on American shores.

      A big comeback in America? Again? How long will it last this time? I'd be shocked if both of these races last five years. I think the Austin track has some potential, but another race in NY/NJ kind of takes away from it a little bit. It would be nice if we could get one race to stick before working on the second.

      I live on the proposed route and I dont know if I love or hate this idea. They can certainly handle getting the fans to and from via NYC and NJ Transit trains and buses, but once they're there - whoa! They better have some amazing ideas concerning crowd control. Not to mention where do they expect all the residents to put their cars? Its mostly street parking around there. Small problem I suppose in the overall picture of it all. On the other hand, the thought of sitting on my roof and watching an F1 race scream down Blvd East gives me goosebumps!!!!

        If NYC takes forever to pave a street, what makes you think they will suddenly work out the kinks for a race. And noise would automatically piss people off. If the people in the Liberty State park area (much more wide open space) turned it down. What do you think of the people who live in the city will say? Not including the money shops and stores would lose because the area is blocked off plus security concerns. The idea is nice and all but unrealistic.

      What's wrong with returning to The Glen? Does the venue not meet F1 requirements, or too rural to meet logistical needs?

        Watkins Glen is more than four hours away from Downtown NYC. Weehawken, NJ is just across from it. Bridge and tunnel ride over. Plus the advantage of public transportation to the venue makes it easier to reach. So yes, too rural. Plus the NYC Skyline would definitely be a great sight to see day or night.

      That would mean 4 new circuits on the schedule within the span of 4 years. How many more races are they going to add without it being a year-long continuous event?

        They add them for about 3 years until the money dries up and then move on. See Turkey next year and Korea a couple after that. This is just the ongoing Bernie cash train arriving at Grand Central Station.

      Franchse cost per annum : $32mm. Cost of creating the circuito n streets and creating grandstands etc $10mm. Cost of public workers overtime etc. $4mm Total cost per annum $46mm. Three day PAYING crowd of 150K at average $100 per ticket $15mm. Formula One management takes all the other revenues like TV etc. So will private investors cover the shortfall EVERY year of $31mm I don't think so................. If these towns held a Street Indycar race with a Franachise fee of maybe $3-4mm this event would stand a chance of happening... Neither of the two towns can afford to spend money on such an event and neither can the State of NJ. And let's face it the spending my the live crowds will be in NYC not Weehawken...

      I'd say no one would attend this, except this year the Baltimore race for IRL was a huge success and had huge crowds, so maybe.

      If Rome couldn't secure a GP with a fan base much more open to F1 cars I can't see how NYC is going to actually make this work. Austin needs to be the sole venue for 5 years or so before there is even thought of a second race.
