2010 Cadillac XTS Platinum Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

Car and Driver is reporting that the often-reported Cadillac flagship is at a crossroads. There have been many rumors that the planned range-topper will wind up as a rear-wheel drive, high-end luxury sedan slotting above the production version of the XTS Platinum (the concept version of which is shown above). Now C/D has apparently been hearing whispers that it may in fact show up as a mid-engined sports car.

While the thought of a luxurious, mid-engined ZR1 sounds appealing, we'll file this in the don't-hold-your-breath category. Although, if the company is brassy enough to build the ultra low-volume CTS-V Sport Wagon, then perhaps anything is possible.

I bought a Cadillac. Never again! Dang car did nothing but cost me a ton of money fixing it all the time. It only has 160,000 miles on it and it has a cracked block due to over heating problems that I had it in the shop 8 times for! People see you coming too. The price doubles when they see you in a Cadillac!

Cadillac is junk junk junk. I don't care how fancy they make em look. It will always be an unreliable piece of junk!

Personally, I think the only way Cadillac would produce a mid-engine anything is if the technology were to be shared by another line. Corvette anyone?
I just don't see Cadillac/GM dumping THAT kind of development money into such a niche product.

More BS from the media (probably from know-it-nothing Fox News). Oh wait, this is a Cadillac. Supposed to be the standard of the world? Huh. Which planet are they talking about? This car is supposed to replace the DTS, not the XLR. Flagship? LOL

      New Caddys = U.P.O.S.

Testing on an XTS mule has been going on for some 6 months now and production is expected late 2011 or early 2012. The DTS/STS account for some 40% of all Cadillac sales so giving up 40% to a maybe 10% at the very most would be a non-starter. It's going to be shared with the Lacrosse platform and AWD standard according to Inside. If Cadillac were to bring out an over the top halo car, nothing less than the Sixteen would be epic.
1000 bhp and 1000ft lb of torque would be orgasmic.

I thought this model was a shortened version of the current DTS with a shorter wheelbase. I guess with Lincoln phasing out the luxo Town Car and similar Crown Vic, the time has come for these old luxobarges.

Were no lessons learned from the XLR?

@OP: Caddy learned that reskinning a Corvette and calling it a Caddy was a bad idea.

        Which is why they stopped.

Then, the Cien came out, and caught people's attention. And presumably, there's earnest money out there in favor of such a beast. The question now lies with positioning and where Caddy really wants to go, given how good the CTS is.

I was thinking the same thing about the XLR. GM should learn from that flop.

Yeah, Autoblog has got to be a little more careful what they post... I can never un-see this. Yet another wretched Cadillac crease that only really worked on the CTS-V. They should put the cloth back over it before they get sued.

The XLR was just a Corvette in a (almost unattractive) Cadillac dress. Being based on the Corvette, its engine was obviously in the front - not the middle. I've never been a huge fan of GM but after driving a new CTS-V coupe, they've won me over. I was not prepared for that thing!

Cadillac probably won't end up building this rumored mid-engined sports car but if they do, you can bet it will be decent.

'Mooted'...really? Don't reach for the thesaurus when you're writing headlines. 'Proposed' would have been fine.

Next time he'll probably want to reach for a dictionary instead ;-)

Maybe they could make the world's first "Luxury mid-engine 4 door coupe"
