Fiat 500 TwinAir on Fifth Gear – Click above to watch the video after the jump

The more cylinders, the better. Right? That's exactly the kind of conventional wisdom that's being turned on its head with the green revolution. Everything from hatchbacks to muscle sedans are dropping pistons like clumsy engine-plant workers these days. But what about the TwinAir engine on the Fiat 500? Have the Italians taken things too far?

That's what the crew over at Fifth Gear have set about figuring out. The other British car show took the latest Cinquecento – all two cylinders of it – out for video review. So how did it fare? Follow the jump to watch the segment for yourself and find out.

        Indeed. Ever since I read AutoCar's review back in October I've become of a solid opinion that this engine is a global player and could work in US. Prices of gasoline got nowhere to go, but up.

        You only get that low if you manage to meet the mileage figures quoted by the government. If you go under, your CO2 emissions will be higher.

      I could be sold on this if the bring it over with a manual and take the 0-60 under 10 seconds. Then I would just upgrade the suspension a bit and call it a day.

      Save the cash and get the standard 1.2L 4.

      At least the driving test was not performed in a LAB. the real driving is the other side of the coin when we have to compare with official numbers. 45 mpg it is amazing. I know the old Suzuki Alto with 3 cyl. and 900 cc could deliver 60 hp and "only" 35 mpg. the specs about this Alto said 55 mpg. what a difference , eh?

        Lowest co2 emissions if any ICE in the world is important in countries where they tax such things. Very high specific horsepower and great fuel economy for thousands less than the 1.4. Brilliant little engine.

        It gets better fuel economy than the 1.4 4-cylinder, has exactly the same 0-60 time and costs 400€ less. Why would anybody still get the 1.4?

      I'm quite curious about the twinair numbers.
      I have seen a couple reviews report similar poor figures.
      But it is not like these are fiat numbers.
      These are official test numbers from the EU, aren't they?

      Is so much discrepancy common in EU mileage figures?

        No they aren't. The Prius is rated at 50mpg in the US and 72mpg (UK gal) in the EU. Converting the EU reading to US gal, the EU rating for the Prius is 60mpg combined, a full 20% higher than the US combined rating.

        An A3 sportback 140PS, S tronic (automatic) S rated at 57.6mpg combined (UK gal), or 48mpg in US gallions. In the US it is rated at 34mpg combined.

        The EU cycle is a lot more optimistic on the same cars. The difference of 20% or more may only amount to a few mpg at low mpg ratings, but on these high mpg cars the numerical difference can be very high.

        In the case of this car, even if it manages to hoodwink the EPA like it seems to have hoodwinked the EU, with 95g/km it still would be only rated at about 46mpg (US gal) combined in the US.

        Nice analysis.

        Also, don't forget that CO2 emissions are directly related to how much gas is burned. The 95g/km quoted will actually be much higher if you are not getting the high mileage that the EU cycle predicts you should be getting.

        I love the idea of a turbo 2cyl. but the reality is that it is most likely the wrong size for a car this heavy *if* the larger engines manage to match the fuel consumption. Love to see how this power plant would do as the range extender on a Volt-like car though.

        EU mileage ratings are known for being a bit optimistic. The EPA will probably rate this something like 35/50 if it ever makes it over here.

        EU rating is almost the same as EPA one, with +/- 2 mpg difference.

      If you drive in London with this you will not have to pay the congestion charge saving you £2,600 per year

      Hey, Autoblog, it'd be great if you actually reported on what's in the video, what were the conclusions, etc., rather than just telling us to watch the video. If I wanted to watch videos, I'd be wasting my time on YouTube rather than reading Autoblog...
